I'm getting ready to do some engine work on my '87 300. I've got two questions for some of you experienced people: (1) Is there a coolant drain plug on the block? I don't see one (could be these damned bifocals, though), and there's not one mentioned in my manuals. (2) I've got the injector cooler blower on my truck. It works, coming on in hot weather for a few minutes after I shut down. I understand why it is there, but would there be a serious problem if I were to remove it? Have any of you run for a long period (years) without it, and did it cause a problem? I want to clean up some of the junk under the hood while I'm taking care of the engine business.
I would appreciate any info. you can pass my way on either of the above questions.
There is no block drain plug,Theres only one in the radiator. If you want to flush coolant from the block, you have to use a water hose (Or equivalnt) and flush it that way.
As for your second question,I don't understand why only the 300's have that little blower,Or why its even there. Can you please explain it to me?
Thanks for your quick reply. It will save me more time looking for a drain plug.
As for the injector blower, my understanding is that it is simply for cooling the injectors down and making it easier to restart in hot weather. All it does is blow fresh air over each injector. As to why it is only on the 300 I-6, maybe some engineering types on here can help out. It seems the injectors are awfully close to the exhaust manifold on it compared to those on a V-type engine.
There is an aweful lot of heat around the injectors and fuel rail. To keep the fuel from vaporizing, they went with a high fuel pressure, small injector. My engine didn't have any cooler, but I bet it is for the same general overheating purpose.
Do the later blocks not have a drain plug? I've got a couple of blocks ('79 & '84) & they both have a plug. Its just below the intake/exhaust & a little hard to see.

My 88 has a plug where I believe you are talking about. However, I think that is technically a screw in freeze plug if we are thinking of the same thing. It may work for draining, I never removed it.
Yes, I see a plug, allen head type, on the manifold side, a little below the freeze plugs. It could be a drain although it seems high up on the block for much of one. By now, I no longer need to drain the block, so I'm going to leave the plug for someone else to pull to see what it is. Me, I'd probably break it, and there would be another job to do.
The cooler for the injectors is because of their placement near the exhaust, and the high fuel pressure they run, more prone to seizing when they sit there and cook when its hot and youve been running for awhile.
