Apparently, Ford installed the older toploaders in Broncos and Jeeps in '80-'86. It was the 4 speed , wide ratio version w/ a tower (or top) shifter for these trucks. It may have also come in a 3 speed/OD version.
I have not been able to confirm this through any Jeep sites. Can anyone here
w/ Bronco trans. tech. knowledge confirm for me? I would like to use one of
these in a conversion (street rod) project, if possible, as the top shifter would
alleviate clearance problems and retain the "old-timey" look in my '36 coupe.
Any and all info. appreciated......

Manual was a New Process 435 in the Big Bronco as far as I know until the Mazda derivatives were employed in '88. If I am mistaken, someone will be along soon to make ammends. If Heeps had em' I certainly wouldn't know nor care. (Reformed Heep owner who now knows better).
There was also what I think was called the SROD, 3sp w/OD. Its the one that you have to push down/left/forward for reverse. My 83 had one, (behind a 302) wasn't too bad a transmission but not near as heavy duty as some and 1st gear was tall enough that any pulling or offroading required low range.
The SROD and the side mount version may have been used in Broncos. Have one (side mounted version) in my '85 E150. 1st is 3.27 or so, much lower than a car top loader.
Go here for info on these, and a kit to make a car toploader a top shifted trans.
You will be taken to the "imposters" part of the site here, where he shows the OD vs. regular 4 speed. Look around the site for the other stuff, including the top shift conversion.
Thanks for the info, guys.
Yeah, it all takes $$$, doesn't it? (Especially to have a shop like D. Kees
do it for you.)
Believe I'll continue the d.i.y. route and see if I can find the tech. article
in Street Rodder that came out a few years back......

The NP 435 was not as popular after 1980...Ford switched to the Borg-Warner T-18 if it was the Granny Gear 4 speed which lasted until 1989 or 1990. The Mazda 5 speed came into play in 1987 and up. The other 4 speed Ford used if it was not overdrive was the T-19 which and a normal 1st gear and 1:1 4th gear and looks the same as the T-18. This tranny was only used behind the 6.9 Diesel though so it would not have made it to the Bronco's from the factory.
