Hey guys, I have a 81 ford f-100 5.0 that I had to take down because of low compression. the engine had mild ring wear (about 3/4 of the thickness of a fingernail). i was wondering if there is a way to fix this with out taking it to a machine shop and having it bored out. i am going to replace the bearings on the crank. and other things that time has worked on. any help and ideas are welcome. thanks
If you have a ridge you need to cut it out. No need to break a new ring on an old cylinder. The ridge cutter (I think you can rent these) will tell you if your cylinders are round or not. You should only need to bore if the cylinder is not round, if it is and you don't you will have gained nothing. Honing must be done in a constant up and down motion with a flood of coolant/lubricant to keep the stones cutting cleanly. Hones will not cut ridges or true cylinders.
My 2 cents
