Blue smoke on cold start

I recently traded my v-10 for an 03 6.0 powerstroke. When I start it in the morning or anytime it has set and got cold it runs rough on start up and smokes blue alot. It will smoke for 10 to 15 seconds then clear up. THe idle improves in about the same time frame. It has not used any oil yet in 2500 miles. If it was a gasser I would say it was bad valve guides. But I do not know if a diesel would act like this. It has 70000 miles. Thanks

Search for starting problems and you will find injectors as a common problem.

Had the exact same problem with my recently purchased 03Excursion but with 44000. Dealer replaced 4 injectors and VGT actuator last week. Problem solved.

I have had this same problem off and on too, mostly in the colder weather, but just started doing it again cold starting in 70's degree weather, hopefully the recall will cure it too as the truck seems to run great otherwise, will keep ya posted.

I had a bit of blue smoke, thats until I disconnected by EGR this last week. No more smoke and no more idle stumble.

Sounds like problem with EGR, typical problem on 6.0.

I will have the 06e17 done this week. If this does not work I will try the egr. Can this just be unhooked without any problems?Where is it on the 6.0? Thanks

06e17 definately helps with this as it changes the way that the egr works. PLEASE dont disconnect it. Thats all you need is more coking deposits

Mine only blows one puff of smoke upon start-up on cold mornings. It does have a rough idle for a couple of minutes and then smooths out. Like I said, it only does this when it has been sitting overnight without being plugged in.

I do have one question though.... I have read in numerous threads that unplugging the EGR while the ignition is off reduces the build-up of crud in the intake. This is the first time that I have read anything negative about it. Can anyone please elaborate????

Thanks,

GH

Have watched mine and the only time it does it is when I don't let the glow plugs go through a full cycle on a cold start, if I let the light go out, no blue smoke. Wondering how many people are getting in a hurry to get it started and go.

Not me I always wait for the light. My truck smokes blue on startup even when it is warm weather if it has been sitting overnight.

This is my first post, I have a 03 6.0 and it has been in the shop for the same reasons at least 4 times. It smokes on start up Idles rough and doesn't have any power until it warms up, it won't even move my trailer.( 8000lbs) You have to hold it to the floor and not until 1800 rpm will it begin to move. The dealer has replaced two injectors, the egr, ip sensor, and done the latest reflash on the comp "recall on cold starts" I picked it upp saturday and it was still running the same way, so it is still at the dealership now, no new news from them yet. Anyone have any clues? I need help.....
