I'm all for improving gas mileage, if possible. I've found that driving tecniques are the easiest to try. Don't race to be the first one at the red light, plan your trips, don't let it idle for extended periods of time,etc.. I remember the "gas crisis" days back in the mid '70s here in the midwest and where people would almost give away a v8 just to get a chance to buy a 4 or 6!
Plugs, timing, etc.. should be done first however.
Some of the basics:
cold air intake, most newer trucks have ducts to do this
cover all the air intake ducts with thermo wrap
thermo blanket for the exhaust
vac sec small 4v carb
vac adv on dist (these are usually stock)
headers and dual exhaust can help most engines
electronic ignition of aftermarket CD MSD type
play with the plug gap, open it up a bit
play with the timming, advance it a bit, check for pinging.
a little extra tire pressure, skinny tires.
some have said that a thin synthetic oil will help.
Some of the harder stuff:
gear change
tire change
shift kit for an auto or adjust the shift point for an auto.
higher compression with high quench heads
small runner intake
cam change
carb change to QJet or EFI upgrade
overdrive upgrade
