Converting to P/S

I'm converting my '77 F100 to power steering. I got a steering box from the junkyard and I see 2 potential problems.
1) I don't have the high pressure hose and don't know if it is suppose to connect to the large fitting on the gear box or the small fitting. 5/16 vs 1/4. Perhaps the smaller because the return line is not under pressure and needs the larger diameter for flow. I don't know.

2)The steering box snout sticks up 3" more than the manual gear box. I thought I just needed to install a shorter steering column shaft but now I think the whole column needs replacing. (I have 3 on the tree)

Thats it, not too painful huh?

Thanks

Well I went out and looked at my car ('77 Merc. Monarch), and the hoses looked the same size, although the pressure hose used a double flare brake type fitting to bolt into the back of the pump, and the non pressure just used a hose clamp to hold it over a small tube that came out of the pump. There were also 2 hoses that connected with the coolant system.
To find out for sure, install the pump and everything, just leave the hoses unconnected at the pump, fill it, start the engine, turn the wheels and watch. where fluid sprays out, connect your pressure hose.

Sorry I wasn't more help,

Fred if I remember correctly it's the larger one. If you purchase the hi-pressure hose it will have the proper fitting.
Don't forget to put a cooling system in the return line. You will at least have to have a shaft from a ps column. I swapped in an auto at the same time so I used the complete column.

Good Luck on the conversion.
