2004 dead battery or electrical system problem. Need help ASAP
Today I was working in my truck installing a new stereo. Finished everything and the had the stereo working fine and was listening to it when all of a sudden it turned off. I looked and my headlights were on and very dim so I assumed I had left them on and the battery went dead. I used my portable jump starter and the truck started but all of my gages sat at zero and kind of bounced up an down. I shut the truck off and turned the key to the on position and the stereo came on and the gauges came up and the stereo back on but there was not enough power to start the truck again. The battery is now on a charger. Did this happen just because of the dead battery or is there something seriously wrong with my electrical system? Thanks
I fear that you may have shorted out something did you by chance cross some wires?
Sounds like your battery is toast. Since you are running a stereo, I reccomend staying with the group 65 battery size. $65 or so should get you a really good one. Brand really doesn't matter just as long as it has decent cca's and a decent warranty. Some will reccomend a optima or something of that nature, but unless you are mounting it wierd like, really no need for a battery that has less reserve minutes than any group 65 battery.
Also check all of the fuses as well. It also wouldn't hurt to have the alternator tested just to see if the battery didn't fry it. Just about any parts joint or place that sells batteries can load test it for free.

Thanks for the quick reply. After taking the charger off and starting the truck everything seems fine. Battery seems fine and is charging but time will tell if im going to have to replace it.
by listenin to the radio with the lights on you killed the battery. during a low voltage condition the guages will do som very crazy things including all reading 0 and bouncing slightly, also a full gauge sweep on all guages is normal
