I just bought a 2000 PSD S/C SB 4X2 and I was just wondering about things to check etc. The truck didn't come with an owners manual so I am a bit blind. I have lots of experience with diesel engines I was just wondering about things peculiar to these trucks. I still can't get this silly grin off my face.
Know what you mean. I bought a 2000 PSD with 75,000 on it....got 113,000 now. I LOVE that truck. Since you're a diesel guy, you know the obvious (fluids, coolant testing - our trucks need the Ford Coolant additive, filters, etc. Other than that pesky cps noted above, I can't think of many other things unique to our diesels. My cps went out about 1000 miles ago. About $90 thru powerstrokeshop.com and a very easy install. Enjoy!
Check on EBAY for the black CPS (I don't want to start the blue/black discussion here)
Here is one right now for $25 without a bid: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CPS-c...spagenameZWDVW
I got mine for $65 shipped.
Install the new one now and then put the old one in your glovebox for when it needs replacing on the dirt road in the middle of nowhere! I just replaced mine yesterday and it wasn't that bad, althought I am glad I replaced it on my schedule in my driveway

I am definitely no expert, but from what I've read so far, the CPS is something to watch for (already covered here); also keep an eye around the turbo pedestal (I just had some leak issues). Some folks have talked about the airbox not sealing well, but I took care of that with the kwik filter mod (6637 filter from fleetfilter.com and a short section of 4" exhaust pipe). Oh yeah, one more thing, the uncontrollable urge to constantly mod your truck...
By the way, how do you know when the CPS is about to go out? I've owned my 01 F250 for a year now since it bought it at 99k miles. Now, it has 124k miles. Since the purchased, I've only flushed the tranny, changed oil every three months, and replaced the fuel filter once. I also had to replaced the front hub three months ago and the rear speed sensor.
I'm not a "diesel guy". I just drive it.
I'm a little worried about the CPS though.
As for the fuel filter, how often do you have to change that thing? Where's a good place to get one if you only need one or two...not in bulk...
I think I'm just going to order a spare CPS anyway. Who knows...I may need it.
How can I find out what engine serial number my truck has?

Westladog - Are you about to go on a long trip towing your trailer with the family in the truck heading into miserable weather on back roads? If you answered yes, your CPS is about to go out!
You can't really tell, but definitely put a spare in your truck and make sure to look where it is at home so you don't have to find it later. Also make sure your have the correct sockets to change it (I think it is a 10mm). To be safe, replace it with a new one and put your current one in the truck.

You can see the ser.# to the rr of the oil filter on a flat boss on the block. Sometimes this number is on the valve cover sticker but mine wasn`t.
