Ok, i finally got my truck home (77 f150 460). I had been sitting for a long time and has some miles one it (133K). I was trying to get it started and i haven't put any good gas in it, i'm taking the motor out pretty soon, so i was just seeing if it'd run. I checked the oil and made sure all the wiring was hooked up. I started cranking it over, and nothing was going on. I remember someone telling me that if the motor was sitting for a while, or had high miles on it to take the spark plugs out and squirt a little oil in it. I didn't have any oil, but i did have some 2 stroke gas mixed up in my back yard. I thought that it would have enough oil to lube the pistons, and get it started. Well, it worked. I put some gas down the carb and the motor fired right up. Really suprised me! It smoked a little bit, but i was just making sure that the engine would actually run. I was wondering, has anyone tried this? Would this hurt the motor if i kept doing this? I'm going to rebuild the motor anyways, but if i had a motor that was sitting for a while, can i still do this to get it started?
Thanks, matt
the only thing it will do is smoke, and eventually oil foul the plugs.i have used 2 stroke mix for the boat many times over the years to move cars and trucks with no gas tanks in them.
ok, thanks for the reply. I started thinking about it clogging the jets on the carb, but like i said, i'm rebuilding it anyways. It did smoke alot though, kind of worried me lol
I remember as a kid, the car I was in ran out of gas on the way back from a camping trip. The only thing we had was mix for the little outboard, and that worked fine. The car overheated a little, but otherwise it was ok.
Wonder why it would overheat? Do you think it was the gas or something wrong with the motor that would make it overheat? I thought that if you ran two stroke gas it would keep the tempuratures down.
Anyway, I wouldn't run it straight. I wouldn't feel bad about dumping five or ten gallons at a time into a tankful, though. We used to do that all the time at the end of the boating season to get rid of the stuff so it wouldn't go to varnish over the winter. DO NOT, HOWEVER, DO IT ON A VEHICLE WITH AN O2 SENSOR OR CATS!
I let mixed fuel sit around for up to 3 months, if I haven't used it up by then, I dump it in the truck ('70's trucks), and get fresh gas when needed. Never had a problem. At the typical 32 to 1 or higher ratios 2 cycle fuel is mixed at, using it straight in a car motor shouldn't be a problem for a few short run times, but long term use may have adverse effects.
