I think it was if your build date is after 10/16/2000 then you have the pmr's but before that then you have the forged.

I'm pretty sure that's the correct date. I know it was in October, just can't remember the day.

Not to split hairs, but my 02 auto said 250hp on the valve cover. Said 525ft-lbs on a ford pride sticker in the back window.

I dont know that the auto was ever rated at 275. The way I understood it was that the auto was bumped up to the 250 rating for that year.

235hp or 275hp

I could be wrong here, but I seem to remember that the green rating sticker on the valve cover ment that the engine was built as a stationary power unit engine. Ie pump/generator/etc.It was rated at 235 hp and was not certified for on road equipment. Not to say that the valve cover was damaged and it was replaced with one from a gen.

I wouldn't worry too much about the HP it does or doesn't have - power is easy to recover on the 7.3.

If it is an older 7.3 plugged into your truck, that is NOT a bad thing. The '01s had PMR - powdered metal rods. That is NOT a GOOD thing. There have been plenty of reports of failures of those rods when people hot rod their 7.3s - and I don't mean trying to get 500 hp out of them, I mean only hot rodding them a little. Of course, not everyone has this problem, but when it happens, it is catastrophic for the engine.

An earlier 7.3 might only have 235hp, but that is easily recovered as they came with forged rods and will take hot rodding to well past 350hp with no rod worries.

I don't know where the serial number is - but someone here must know. See if the number matches your truck. IF it doesn't, you can track the serial number through Ford to find out the date of manufacture. If it is pre-October2000, then it has forged rods. If it does, then you have 275 hp no matter what the sticker says.

The switch from 235 HP to 275 HP came at abut midyear in the 01 production run. An 8/2000 build date means you have a forged rod, 235 hp early 01. There's nothing at all unusual about it.

Well if your right cookie, then my only question left is where is the serial # located so that I can verify that the engine is original (fact in question from the green sticker) to make sure that my mileage is acurate.

Also I guess this means that I will have to do an extra mod or two the make up the difference (wallet permitting of course).

Allright, so I was Jonesing pretty hard about this one so I went outside with the flashlight and found the white international build decal on the driver side V/C and it shows a build date of 09 Sep 2000. . So I'm jumping up and down right? You guys know that I will eventually be peeking through that hole in the block just to be sure they're forged though. Thanks for all the help.

The stamped serial number is on the crankcase aft of the oil filter head.

my early 01 auto (build date 8/00) has 250 hp on the valve cover sticker. was the mid year hp increase for the manuals only?

So mine says 04/01 as a build date, it must be a real late 2001 build?

yeah. i think the standard is that they stop in june (month 6), so all engines up to 6/01 are late 01, and then (i think) 7/01 and younger are early 2002. i believe my truck has a 10-01 build date. its a 2002.

I had a tough time seeing my ser# on that little flat surface and simply used a scotch abrasive pad and that revealed the hidden code.
