the 289

when did production begin on the 289? i have seen a couple of people here say 65 and a guy i work with says 65 for ford but mercury had it in 64. I wasnt alive in 64 or 65 so i cant say definitively but i have seen pictures of 289 hi-pos in 64 fairlanes. And i would have sworn the 64 cobra was available with a 289 and i believe the 289 4 barrel was available in the 64 galaxie. Can anyone set me straight? thanks Don.

289 was available in 1963, although it was late year entry because it replaced the 260 ci. The 289 was not available in full size Galaxie with a four barrel carb. Only 2 barrel version. They were available in Fairlane as you stated.

The 289 was introduced in 1963, stepped up from the 260 which in turn came from the 221, introduced in 1962. Ther was some overlap in prodution on these engines, the 221 was built through the end of the 1963 model year while the 260 was built through the end of the 1964 model year. (Some sources say the 260 was introduced at the same time as the 221, some say it came out 6 months later.) The 289 was built from '63 to the end of the 1968 model year, when it was replaced by the 302.

There was a major design change during the 1965 model year, and perhaps that's what some people are thinking of when they say it came out in '65. That year they changed from a 5-bolt bellhousing to the six-bolt pattern that stayed with these engines through the end of production.

I can verify that my '65 Falcon had a 289 in combination with a 3-speed manual trans (column shifted). This was my "hot" car in high school (early 70's). Things I remember most about this car:
  • The 289 loved to rev, and rev hard. I know it's not a heads-up comparison but I think it out-reved my current 302 ('93 F150) substantially. Could be a lot of factors: shorter stroke, lighter car, .... at any rate that engine was a REV-ER!
  • In the superlight Falcon, the 289 was impressive .... I remember getting the school burnout awards because the rear end was so light. Studded snow tires only made the experience even more special! Also, the car was light enough to see some serious top end. I personally remember 130-ish numbers with the windows all-a-shakin!
Sorry for the trip down memory lane, but I wish I had kept that little Falcon ... maybe I'll get another!

Almost all of the miles I've put on my Tiger have been with the 289, but I'm looking forward to driving it with the new 302 I've been building for it. It's basically the motor I used to run in my race car but with a streetable cam, better (as in aftermarket aluminum) heads then we were allowed to run in our class, and a 4bbl carb instead of the 2bbl we were restricted to. I still twisted that motor to 72k routinely. be interested to see waht it'll do that lightweight Tiger. Talk about a burnout champ! Even with the relatively mild 289 it was all I could do get it to hook up.
