Got a '60 F100, 292, 3 sp., 2 bbl. Seems to miss on #2, guessing from pulled plug wire. Engine has 12,000 since rebuild. (long block by PO). Compression all around is 135 to 145. New plugs (.35), points (.14), condensor, timimg at 10, firing order is 15486372, carb cleaned and repaired (function is real good). Cap and wires switched with another set with the same results. No wobble in the dist shaft. Clear fuel filter (new) with no fuel flow issues. Valves have a steady, light clatter. Truck starts in a split second, idles good, misses upon accel, load or not. All these items have been checker more than three times each so I feel all is correct there.
Could valves cause this miss but still have the compression results? Truck has a fluttering suction at the tail pipe on that side which took me to check the compression. Thought it was a burnt valve but... Has backfire from that side tail pipe also.
Plan is to adjust valves just to be sure, replace wires and cap as that is all that is not new, then shoot the truck if it still misses. Getting a bit agravated at this problem.
Well, an update. New plugs, points, and capacitor. No change. Did the valves. All were at 25 plus, now at 19. Sounds a lot better without all the clatter but still misses. Got new wires but not installed yet. Will update again in the am.
are you getting good fire to that plug when you pull the wire off.can you see a good spark.i once had a lobe were of in the dist,so the points didnt open on one cylinder.just a longshot.
Yep, had good fire. Went out to put on the new wires and discovered they were the wrong set in the correct box. What a bummer. Last set in town too. Anyway, that will not slow me down. I took the two old sets and checked them all and made the best set out of them. Put them out and (drum roll please) IT RUNS WITH NO MISS! Now, at least I have a darn good tune up on it. Just need to order the correct wires and it will be on to restoring. Thanks for all the suggestions.
Good to hear Pete, I have been checking in on your thread here to see if you got it fixed. I have a slight miss as well and figured it to be a plug wire too. Good job and Good Luck!
The stock way of routing the wires behind the block is guaranteed to cause a miss sooner than later. A set of non 8MM 460 wires is the correct length if you want to reroute with various stand offs and looms. It doesnt look as pretty as stock but no more problems.
