Compatible engines for 1996 Explorer

After a complete breakdown on the highway, I am told my crankshaft has broken and I'll need to either get a new one and rebuild the engine, or get a replacement engine. The engines seem to be in rare supply, and I wonder what other engines are compatible and could be used as a replacement.
Stats are 1996 Explorer XLT. V6. Automatic (I think they all are, aren't they?)

TIA

Actually, there are some stickshifter Exploders out there. Most are Exploder Sports, though.

If you want as straightforward a swap as possible, look for a 95-later OHV 4.0L.

I believe car-part.com will say...95 and 96 actually. Yes they do.

I know that ~98 models went to returnless fuel system, but to get around that, you can swap all the goodies from your roasted engine onto the block you find. I believe 97 has PATS in the computer, but if you don't bother with the computer from that year, then you should be safe.

If you feel confident in the diagnosis, great. If not, a second opinion never hurts, unless the engine was peeled open and you eyeballed the damage yourself.

Of course, 96 was the first of the 302-equipped Exploders, but you'd need the tranny and engine bay harness for sure. I know the v8 models weren't that common, though.

I've called the local auto salvage now that they are open, and they tell me the following are all compatible. Can anyone verify or disprove what they say?

Compatible engines:

1991-1996 Explorer
1993-1996 Ranger
1990-1996 Aerostar
1994-1996 Mazda B4000
1994-1996 Mazda Navaho

Thanks,

Evan
