I have been trying to figure out what the "proper" timing for my 390 is for some time. My chiltons book says 6° but the sticker on my valve cover (which is for a 74 thunderbirdy) says 16° right now im at 14° and it seems to be working good. In an early post someone said that retarding the timing would give you better mileage. I thought that advancing it would give better eficiency?
Dave, they must be confused, I advanced my timing from 10 to 14 degrees and gained a mile a gallon, it went from 9. something to 10.2, adding pcv I am now at 10.8
LAST EDITED ON 27-Jan-01 AT 01:12 PM (EST)[p]Mike, I have a 360 in my truck. It is basically stock except for a pertronix ignitor and big cap, Pertronix 40 k volt coil, and 9mm plug wires. It has 3.73 gears which seem to run out in 1st at about 20 or so. I set the timing by feel rather than by specs, (specs don't seem to mean anything to my truck). I can't make a right turn without roaching the tires. Even on a straight line, I can smoke 'em until I let off the gas. And NO, it's not because my tires are bald! :-) I guess what I'm gettin at is if your engine is tuned to the gills, you should have PLENTY of power. But I still plan on building a 390!! Bill
