I have a miss in my 4.6 but my check engine light is not coming on.The truck has 66k on it.Could this possibly be a fuel filter or pump?To my understanding a computer check would not do any good without the check engine light being on. Where should I start?
No. The miss is very sporadic. It very seldom does it at idle most of the time at 55 to 65 mph.I thougt at first it might be my transmisson but I noticed my tach moving.
Hey dude I have that same problem and I am trying to figure it out as well and I have a 4.6 w about 65k on it. I changed the plugs already and the boots on the coils. and it was fine for a while but then it started doing it again. I have a new fuel filter, No lights come on so yes the computer was useless to check it because it couldnt find anything. So far I think that it may just be something in my fuel system somewhere. I am not to sure. I cleaned out all of my injectors... So being shy from just replacing the fuel pump I am at a stand still. If you figure out anything else can you please let me know. Because i am getting frustrated. You came to the right website there is a ton of awsome knowledge on here. Hopefully we can both get this all figured out.
I've had a miss in my 99 4.6 for about 6 months. OBD said it was a miss in cylinder 6. Changed plugs, wires, cleaned out throttle body plenum, replaced almost every item related to the EGR. Miss would go away for about 50 miles then return. In the last 2 days the miss got worse. Pulled OBD again and it states that 4 & 6 misfire detected, as well as insufficient catalytic flow. Took it to local mechanic who says it's a burnt valve. It has almost no power and shudders when accelerating. My question... how do i determine if it is a valve, and if it is, would a rebuilt head be a stopgap until I can get a rebuilt motor? Can't afford one right now, but need the truck!
Thanks for any input
I appreciate the information from yall.IF I figure it out I will let yall know.My problem is not consistent. It may be fine for a couple of weeks and then miss for one day and then be fine for another couple of weeks.I am thinking possibly water in the fuel system.
Well, this is beginning to sound like a danged conspiracy!! LOL... My truck is in the same mileage range...between 66,000and 67,000 and mine just started missing at half throttle. Slow accelleration it runs fine. I changed fuel filter first..nada..no change. I don't have a lot of money to take it to the dealership and with my bad back, I don't want to be leaning over the hood or doing contortions from underneath to change plugs, etc. If any of you figure it out quicklike, it sounds like a problem that is going to be fairly consistant with all of our 4.6's. I may have to break down, before summer, because it seems that the miss is slowly getting worse. I was thinking it may be one of the COPS on the plugs, but like everyone else...no code. I've no doubt my O2 sensors are in need of replacement...that's a constant problem with mine... but ever since I reset the light, even the o2 sensor light hasn't come back on. Seems like in another forum, someone else had this same issue and changed COPS. I'll keep an eye here just out of morbid curiosity.
Update to last post....Took truck to another mechanic. Said I didn't have burnt valve, but #4 and #6 injectors bad. Bought new injectors, installed them, still missing though not as bad. Went to local Autozone, very helpful guy suggested 3 part fuel cleaner system and new fuel filter. I did that and truck runs 70% better. Still skips at low rpm's and slight load....no check engine light but at least it's driveable! I don't know what to do next and welcome any suggestions. Still wondering about a burnt valve. Don't know how to check for that though. btw, forgot to mention mileage is 215000. In spite of troubles, has been a great truck!!!
with my 00 4.6l it was a bad plug on cyl. 1 but the mechanic also checked the coil pack as well, my truck would Idle fine but shudder at a light acceleration and eventually got to the point that I didn't want to drive it
