Thats odd, in my last two modular V8's (1997' 4.6L & 2000 5.4L), I never had to add oil.

My 2000 has 55k on it and the last time I changed oil I noticed that only about 4 qts drained. Finished the changed and kept checking. Looses a quart in about 2k miles. I swithched to a full syntheticabout a year ago and it immediately ended a lifter noise. Don't know why the synthetic should burn up any quicker than dino oil. Maybe I'll switch back and see what happens.

For the first 55k it was MC 5w-20 @ 5k intervals. I never checked the level, but always noticed it was down a quart when I was changing it.

I now use for almost 20k mi Mobil 7500 5w-20 and have been going 7500 mi between changes. So, now I started looking at my dipstick more often.

always replace PCV every 2 years its only a couple of bucks. and watch for fitting on back of engine its subject to oil and heat. fitting deteriorates quickly: poor design and PCV hose assy cost 50 bucks and good luck finding amechanic that can reach back behind supercharger and get to fitting on lower back engine.

Is your driving alot of short stop n gos of less than 15 mi?

If so, I'd say the useage is about right considering every else equal.

FWIW, I'd lay down good money that switching back to MC 5w20 would help out on the oil consumption, but this is just based on my personal observations.

Charlie has made a good point here. The 5.4 is notorious for using oil when the PCV goes bad. If you do a search here for PCV, you should get a bunch of hits for other threads where people had an oil burning problem with the 5.4L and when they replaced the PCV, the problem went away.

I agree because my 5.4L uses no oil in 3000 miles even with many short trips (3 miles from work) and heavy towing (7000lbs +). It has 60,000 miles on it now.

5.4 uses quite a bit

My 5.4 (99 F250 auto) has used about a quart per 1000-1500 miles since new. If you only use 1 per 2000 I think that's doing pretty good. It seems that anything less than 3 qts consumed between oil changes is acceptable depending on who you ask. I don't like having to check and add it so much but the alternative seems to be a new truck and a lotta luck.

I used Penn 5-30 for years, lately trying MC 5w-20. Waiting for results now. I may look at the PCV if nothing changes.

My 2002 F250 5.4L began using quite a bit of oil last year. Last fall I changed the PCV valve and consumption seems to be down.

MC oil is good but I like the Castrol Syntec 5W-20 for my 5.4. It really quiets down the valve lifters and idles smoother. Also lasts about 6000,miles but I do it at 2K anyway.

161k on my 5.4 and does not use a drop of oil. Drains 6qts every 3000 miles.

Engine sounds like it's new.

For those of you who have replaced the pcv valve and noticed a difference, was the replacement one different from the oem? And also was the oem one stuck? I just replaced mine because of oil consumption and the replacement had a much lighter weight inside it. The oem one was still free so I don't know if it will make a difference or not yet.
