Fuel Brand

What brand of diesel fuel do you use? Anyone notice any adverse effects of using one brand over another? Cold start? Fuel Economy? Filter clogging? Foul mouth station attendants?

When I am on the road Flying J gives me the best results and usually the best price. Around home it's Valero, if I use hess I lose around 1mpg.

I use any hi-volume Diesel station, preferably where large trucks fill up. The cheapest volume station near me is 76/Conoco owned by Al-Sal Oil. When traveling I usually fill at Flying J or Love's. The TransferFlow tank fills very quickly and doesn't spit back, even when using hi-volume truck stop nozzles.

Diesel is diesel (for the most part) and buying from high volume stations is key. Just make sure they are not getting a delivery right before or during yoru fill-up, as this will mix any water and fuel together and you will pump both into your tank.

After delivery, the water settles to the bottom oif their tanks and all you get is good fuel. Some cities, counties or states may mandate different cetane levels for their diesel, so one's stations fuel may seem like it is better or increases your mileage.

I live in Kansas City and buying diesel on the Missouri side of the state line is less expensive than on the Kansas side... less taxes!!! However, its the same truck that delivers the same fuel to many of the stations (I asked a delivery driver one day when I was fueling up).

I have to second the Flying J vote. They have a high throughput/turnover on diesel and universally offer some of the cheapest prices.

I use Speedway, Citgo or Pilot the lines are usually too long at Flying J and 1 exit up are these three stations for .01-.02 more per gallon.

Just an FYI, I was doing work at a fuel tanker truck loading terminal last week and tankers from all sorts of independents and one major brand were filling up from the same pipeline. The pipeline originated from a major refinery in a major city and ran down the coast for 120 miles. Other pipelines run out to Vegas, no doubt with various terminals along the way. Buying a major brand might get you a different dose of the additive package, but it is basically the same fuel. I heard that Chevron may have their own dedicated pipelines though. I felt better about buying from independents after seeing all of those no-name tankers filling up with the same juice as the major. If you ever saw the Simpson's episode from the Duff Brewery where Duff light, Duff Dry and Duff Regular were all being filled from the same pipe, you know what I mean.

I tend to fill up at Hess or Flying J's. It is hard to get my 39' 5er into most stations so I tend to go where the big trucks go. Usually a bit better priced in the eastern USA. When cetane ratings are posted all I have seen is either 40 or 45. Most pumps don't display the cetane level.

2005 F350 DW CC Lariat Dark Stone no mods. 21,000 mostly trouble free miles.

There is a Pilot truckstop on 95S that is about 15 miles out of my way, but I always use them because I never received bad fuel from them, and more importantly they are 8 cents cheaper that the cheapest I can find in town.

Same here for the Pilot station.
Quality fuel and good prices for Florida anyway. Mike Kelly

I use the local Shell station since it is right on my way home, usually (90% of the time) has the best prices close by, and I always see diesels in there filling up.

I do not know if this, my comment, is true but I read an old post here somehwere that a guy said yes all the oil companies use the same pipelines but they send their fuels down it in waves. you will get 10k gal of mobil followed by 10k gal of shell, followed by ... you get the idea. No clue what that does to the quality, I feel safe as long as the station has a high volume of turnover on the fuel or if it has a large collection of 18 wheelers sitting there waiting to fill up.
