I am new to FTE and to owning a diesel (and the top of the page keeps tellimg me I should post something, so here it is). This post is mainly because I need sympathy and reassurance. My wife and I just invested a lot of money in a 2006 E350 with 6.0L PSD, converted to a Class B RV, 4 WD by Sportsmobile. Fabulous rig. "Everyone" said the diesel was the best, get it not the V10 gas, so we went with the diesel.
After getting it home, I decided to check out this forum and see all sorts of comments aobut the 6.0L PSD having many problems. First sickening feeling. I don't like having trouble and have never had a significant problem with any Ford truck (Courier then Ranger followed by an F150).
Low and behold, here were are with this nice shiny new rig, with only 2,500 miles on it, all easy highway miles, and it has oil drops on the bell housing. Ford service today says it is apparently the rear main, but Ford would probably cover it under warranty. I'm sure the probably is because they will consider blaming it on the Sprtsmobile 4WD conversion.
So, please reassure me. This great looking, wonderfully driving truck is not going to be a steady stream of small to big problems and will take me to and from Alaska and the mountains of the great Northwest for an easy 200,000 miles or so with few problems. Afterall, diesels are supposed to to 400-500,000 miles!
I am a Ford certified diesel tech and all I can tell you is my own experience with the 6.0. The most important advice I can give is make sure you watch the quality of the fuel you buy because the 6.0 is extremely prone to fuel related problems(turbo vanes sticking causing overboost damage-egr valve sooting up-injector issues) I have also had numerous vehicles that problems were solved by changing oil(wrong classification-wrong weight-poor maintenance) but mostly trouble free
At 28,000 miles my truck has been flawless. My oil ?Leak? was nothing more than assembly lube and drops never hit the ground. Bone dry for over 26,000 miles.
Most probably melted assembly lube. But the dealer can run UV dye in your oil and then check the area with a black light a few weeks later. If there is a leak from the rear seal or elsewhere, it will glow like a firefly. There's a service bulletin on it, it IS covered by warranty. No worries there.
I just got mine back from Ford for the oil leak. They dyed the oil, pulled the trans and then changed the rear main seal. The service advisor said Ford had some bad seals and the one that they put in was an updated part. I hope this takes care of it.
Mine has a whopping 1900 miles on it.
We'll see.
Hey Nwxtl, I did the same I bought an 05 f250 psd in the fall to pull my trailer. Well at 7500 miles had to replace rear main & oil sending unit seals. Now at 8100 miles I got another leak. Ford said the uv dye is showing up some where on top? Trucks been gone another week. Great truck but nervous about all these leaks.
I've had all the typical leaks on my '05 and it only has 6700mi on it. None were too serious, just the typical ones on the front seal, glow plug, and rear seal. Everything was covered under warranty and my dealer even gave me a rental each time. I haven't lost faith in the PSD yet though, and the truck still drives great. My previous Ch**y leaked just as bad, so I guess it's par for the course.
Most likely on a brand new engine, it's assembly grease. Apparently it's liberally applied during build up. The incidence of rear main leakage is lower than other 'common' leaks that show up on the bell housing. ICP sensor, glow plug harness among them. Do a search for more info, and insist they use dye to pinpoint the source before assuming the source.
I just got mine back from the shop last week for the same thing, that is the rear main leak. The truck only had 1500 miles on it when it went into the dealer, i was pretty pissed off. I checked under the truck the other day and everythhing looked dry, thank God. I hope it stays that way, in addition, i hope i don't get all the other leaks everyone is talking about in the future. My question is, what is Fords deal...if there has been several leaks regarding the 6.0 engines, why don't they correct the problem. Otherwise, the truck is geat, it pulls like a champ.
Thanks everyone for the comments and reassurance. As of late Friday, Ford service had not quite taken it all apart, I guess they are in no hurry. Before they began I was told they'd use die to determine the leak source, but don't know if they did. Friday the service manage said it does "appear" to be the rear main seal that is leaking.
I wonder though if it isn't really one of the other sources mentioned in these messages, because the morning I took it in, the oil on the bottom of the bell housing did not look "fresh." Oh well, Ford's diesel mechanic ought to know what he's doing, right?
Hopefully it will be done Monday or early Tuesday and I'll let you know what was repaired.
Just a short note to report that the leak was the rear main seal. It was repaired under warranty with only a minor complaint about the extra work required because of the 4WD conversion.
