Speaking of Ken Rockwell's site, I was reading his review of the Nikon D50... and I think I'm hooked on buying one now.

I have a kodak, and find that if I hold the "half press" until I line up the shot and then push the button all the way that there's basically no lag. I think part of the lag is as previously mentioned the time it takes the camera to focus. Some of the old film point and shoot cameras also have this problem.

A friend of mine just bought a D50, and he has been extremely happy with it!
Here is a comparison of a D50 to a D70 from DPREVIEW:

We use an older Canon A60, which is only 2 mp. I like the fact it has manual overrides. We shoot mostly on medium resolution, which is only 1 mp, and it's fine for snapshots. There is a noticeable shutter lag- forget moving objects! I'm eyeing the Nikon D50; maybe at Christmas time. I miss my old SLR's.

Jay, that's one of the things that attracts me to a camera like the Nikon D50. I don't have much experience with photography, but I do know that one thing that really annoys me when using other people's digital cameras is the fat lag whenever you try to take a picture. It takes a half hour to focus, then another 5 seconds to snap a pic, then another five before you can take another pic... maybe a little exaggeration, but either way it annoys me.

Here's a quick blurb on the frame rate from Ken Rockwell's site:
Frame Rate: 2.5 FPS. Just a little slower than the D70's 3 FPS. It has a buffer, however its depth is unspecified. With the right card it is specified to run for 137 frames continuously till it overflows.

Seems like that means you can snap 2.5 pics per second, and just keep snap-snap-snapping away for quite a few pics. Sounds nice for action shots, etc.

Anyway, I think I'm going to go buy one tonight. I like this thread and all the reviews I've been reading because they help me justify buying it for myself.

Well.... I did it. Got the Nikon D50 (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d50.htm)

Here it is:

Here are a couple of pics I took in a mirror with me holding the camera. Beware.... 2:30 am, unkempt.
http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/2075/dsc001017xi.jpg
http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/8448/dsc001415yv.jpg
^ 2nd pic is very serious

Here are a couple pics I took from around the house:
fruit basket: http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/1581/dsc001813yk.jpg
Justin ostrich skin boots: http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/3799/dsc006411hd.jpg

I shrunk these pics way down for quicker viewing (and so imageshack would allow me to upload them). I've taken a whole load of others from all around our home, and the quality of pictures this thing takes is amazing.

I really am enjoying this camera so far. It snaps pics SO quickly... it's really a joy to use. I can snap a pic in an instant, see it immediately, delete it in a fraction of a second, scan through pics on the camera with no delay between pics. Let it sit for a couple of hours then pick it up and snap a pic instantly - no waiting for it to turn on, etc. The wonders of a DSLR (as I've been reading about).

Can't wait to get it outside and take some pics of my truck.

Congratulations on your new camera!!! I have had my D70 over a year now, and I'm still learning it!!! Once you get into shooting in RAW format, and post-processing your pictures with Nikon Capture, you will not believe the
capabilities you will have. One of the features of Nikon capture is controlling the camera from your computer (laptop in my case). My friend that bought the D50 found he had to download a new release of Nikon capture so his computer would see the D50 on the USB port....just a heads up for you.

Thanks for the tips, Bob! I'm going to read through the manual and do some experimenting over the next few days... I've got a lot to learn.

I just dropped mine and now the lense won't retract into it's closed position inside the camera!!! It's whines and churps a couple times and them seems to just shut off.

Reread my post. If you can use or need a DSLR....buy one.

The Canon does great for all my picture needs. I have a Yashica 35mm film camera that I use for serious shots.

But for just average camera use...the point and shoots will do just fine.
Here is your original post where you say that DSLRs are for professional photographers....not true....I'm not a professional photographer, I just
want the highest quality images....Where are you going to find a point and
shoot with a f/1.4 lens??????

One of the things I like about my new Nikon D50 (a DSLR) is how it snaps pics so quickly. It responds to all my inputs extremely fast. After experiencing a digital camera like this I doubt I'd ever be satisfied using a regular point and shoot camera again (this is actually the first I've owned, but I've used others digital cameras, and what has always annoyed me about them is how slow they are). I'm sure they work well for others, but after learning about and seeing how much better DSLRs are (and how inexpensive they are now) I couldn't see not getting a DSLR.

I think I'll post a couple of pictures I took earlier today, later tonight, for everyone's viewing pleasure (hopefully ).
