A couple of weeks ago when I went out to start my truck nothing happened accept that I heard a click sound coming from under the hood . It appeared to be coming from the starter solenoid mounted on the passenger side firewall. What is really weird is that I jumped across the two terminals and nothing really happened. I turned the key and just got the same click sound from the solenoid, now with the jumper wires still across the terminals and doing nothing else, (my keys were still in the ignition and in the start position) I had my head down looking at the fuse block and the truck started on it's own. I assumed since I had the keys in the ignition and the starter solenoid jumped and that it did start, it had to be a bad solenoid. I went out and bought a new solenoid and replaced it. After replacing it went to start truck but the same thing, just one click sound from the starter solenoid. So I Jumped across starter solenoid once again and it started right up. Everyday for the past two weeks the truck has been starting up fine no problems, Until yesterday. Went to start and back to the same thing accept this time I didn't jump across the two starter solenoid terminals, I removed the wires from the solenoid, left them off for a couple minutes and then reattached wires back on. Truck then started fine. Today went to start and back to the same old thing, Accept this time no matter what I tried can't get it to start . Just getting (1) click from starter solenoid. Anyone ever had anything like this happen to them? Please Help!!! Could it be the Ignition switch? Park /Neutral Switch Bad? Bad Computer? Would a bad starter act like this?
The solenoid on the firewall is actually a relay. There is a solenoid on the starter too.
A common problem is the main cable at the starter corrodes and breaks off. I would check the connections there.
A couple days ago there was a similar problem posted in here. Take a look at https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=467147
Would like to thank you for your quick reply to my problem. Starting at the battery I cleaned all connections. Truck started right up and has been running for the past day. I'm still a little worried that it might happen again. The other times this happened basically all I did was disconnect the battery cable to the starter relay and rehooked them back up and then the truck started again and was good for a week . Wondering if my disconnecting the battery cable just reset something in my on Board computer.
I quess I will have to wait and see.
The PCM (Powertrain Control Module or computer) doesn't have anything to do with the cranking part of the system so I think it was just coincedence that it made a difference or you wiggled the bad connection and that helped.
