I have a White 1954 F-100 that I am updating from a older 1989 frame off restoration. I have gone through the 429 and C6, added a Spray on bed liner and Tonneau Cover, added new Wheels and Tires, added Powdercoated Running Boards and finally added a Flowmaster Exhaust.
I want to install a Polished Dash Plate and set of 5 gauges (don't need a tach) what have some of you guys used ???
i saw an interesting one in the galleries section on a '54 from louisiana. i don't know where it came from, but i liked it. it was a new gallery entry, so the pictures should be easy to find. it was a light yellow '54.
Check my pics, I've got two of my dash. Neither is REALLY good, but they'll give you an idea.
I've got Dolphin guages set in a piece of bird's eye maple. They're white guages with black markings and chrome rings. They work well and are entirely electric, which I like.
I have a Flaming River painted column with a polished column mounted shifter. I took it out for my first ride with this combo and now I get to see the reflection of the shifter in my windshield. I'm not happy about this, may have to paint it. So give some thought about the shiny stuff.
also try J&B Microfinish, http://www.jbmicrofinish.com . They have 5 or 6 hole plates available or can custom make something for you. They made the dash in the 2004 Ridler award winner.
I like the matte finished or brushed face plate. I favor the analog round gauges over the digital ones. R & B's, LMC, SAC Vintage Ford all have a good selection.
I really like the Dolphin Speedo. Calibration is a no brainer, just need a road with a measured mile. Can be recalibrated anytime you change tire sizes, tranny or rear end gears etc.
I'm partial to the original dash plate on my 56. The aluminum ones look great with the gauges installed also and are more efficient than the originals. By the way, I really like B/B's truck and dash.... I painted the outside plate of my stock dash the same color as my dash top and truck (midnight blue) so it doesn't stand out but flow with the dash. The gauges, I left alone because they work. I'd really like to know how Chip Foose's crew did the 120 mph dash on the original dash plate on Chips Overhaulin 56. It looked original and very nice. The originals only go to 90 mph. I like my original, because it gives my interior that classic look from the 50's. But then again, I'd like my dash to look like B/B's Probably should of never looked at his gallery.
