While checking out brakes today I noticed what looks like axle seal came out of housing, it is just sitting on axle, tried to push back in place but I think it won't be that easy, next I look at the other side (driver) and it is the same, I actually have no seal in both sides of my front axle.
Has anyone experienced this before, what do I need to do to repair, I worried about dirt etc damaging bearings.
That is what's left of your axle dust boot. There's supposed to be a rubber "boot" that holds that ring up agiainst the axle.
It' probably not critical that you replace it, but it is an indication of the age of your front axle seals. If you are really up-tight about those kind of things, it may be time to replace the axle dust boot and the knuckle seal.
How I noticed problem was I was spraying some PB Blaster on some exposed threads and I heard lubricant shoot into axle, I would love to think that I am not seeing a seal hanging there but I'm pretty sure that's what it is. Seems unusual to have both sides like that.
If I'm looking at a ring or something hanging there then the seal would have to be an internal mount because their isn't nothing else. I do plan to look at another truck to verify, Thanks
very common it is imsply a dust/dirt "seal" the keep crud from getting into the axle housing. the actual oil seal is installed from the inside of the diff housing. haven't seen many SD's with this seal not like this
