Okay, I just bought my 99 Mountaineer about 2 weeks ago. I have had numerous little problems with it already- good thing its under warranty! I took my car to the shop to get the oil sending unit replaced and I asked the mech. to look at my rear axle because it is making a whining noise at speeds from 30 and above. It seems like it is only when I am accelerating though. When I let off the gas, it stops! He told me "oh, its just your pinion bearings going out, no need to replace it. You can drive like that for up to 4 years". What do you guys think? Now my warranty company thinks its not that bad. Any way to get it fixed faster??
Also the tube going from my EGR valve to my maifold has a hole in it? They are giving me problems about fixing that as well. Is it hard to replace? Where can I get the part?
AND now, I am having problems with my gas pedal. After driving a few miles, it gets very hard to push down and when you do push it down it acts like it is to much power because it JOLTS you! HELP !!!
Last question I believe will be a cable between the pedal and throttle. No grease just a replacement of the entire cable.
First question. I have not come across an explorer or mountaineer that has not whined to some degree. Truck gears whine period. Your mountaineer is a truck. At 20k they whine, 80k, 140k(miles that is).
Don't know anything about the egr.
Thanks for the reply. I was not sure if it was the throddle cable or not. Is that what you are talking about? My whining noise is very extensive though and it makes a weird noise when I put it in reverse. Not sure if that is from my axle or not. It needs to be fixed. Ugh!
As for the rear end noise, if can get hold of 2 pair of jack stands, put the Mountaineer up on the jack stands or a service rack and then start it up and put in forward/reverse and crawl under and see if you can pinpoint the whine.
Another place to check on the accelerator problem is to look at the metal plate that the accelerator pedal is mounted to on the inside "firewall" of the drivers compartment. Had similar sounding problem with my '99 Explorer EB AWD 5.0L back a couple years ago. The mounting bracket had started to pull away from the inside "firewall". The cause was cheap rivets through cheap sheet metal. I ended up drilling out rivets from bracket and using oversized self tapping screws and putting "Gorilla" glue between the bracket and the inner "firewall". Haven't had a problem with it since did it a couple years ago and smash down the accelerator daily with my size 13. Good luck...
I have whining with my '98 Mountaineer V8 but after looking into this awhile back I concluded it was the alternator, it's inbred and can't be eliminated.
