2Y vs. 2YABC

I am new to this site and I need to get an answer to a tech question about 460 cranks as I am in the process of building a 429CJ and planning to use 460 crank. What is the difference between the 2Y cranks? I know the years and such. But what if anything is the diff between the, 2Y, 2YA, 2YAB, 2YABC. Is the 2YABC better to use for high performance than a 2Y? I heard something about first level, second level, what ever that means? I heard that the 2YABC has more nickel or something? I have both cranks 2Y and 2YABC and just what to use the better of the two? I would appreciate any info you guys might have.

thanks/cheers - G

I know you are waiting to hear an answer, but all I can tell you is that I do not know of any differance in the ones you listed, or the one you did not list, 3y.

Maybe someone else has heard somthing.

Have you checked the ford interchange catalog? I know they sell the book at any book store. Might be worth a trip to take a look at it for more info. I did manage to find this at a ford site online though.

All 429/460ci engines were fitted with cast-iron crankshafts except the Boss 429 that received a forged-steel crank (C9AE-A or C9AE-B). All 429 cranks are marked 4U or 4UA. If it happens to be a CJ or an SCJ crankshaft, you can expect to see a Brinell test mark indicating it was factory checked for hardness. If you’ve found a 460 crank, expect to see a 2Y, 2YA, 2YAB, or 2YABC. After 1978, 460 cranks were marked with a “3Y.”

I hope this gives you a direction to go though.

^ pre-87 vs later - that was due to external vs internal balance of the rotating assembly.
