9 inch rear questions

my truck has a 9 inch ford rear end with axle code 47. does anyone know what my rear gear ratio is given this code? also, if i wanted to pull the pumpkin out to check the ratio, how would i do it. i mean the obvious is to remove the drive shaft, bolts, etc, but what about the axles, do they have to be unbolted behind the drums and pulled out. basically im asking what has to be done to get into the rear end. thanks f100

look around for a tag on one of the bolts before you go pulling it apart, it will have the gear ratio on it

It's pretty easy to pull out the carrier. Undo the four bolts holding the driveshaft on the rear diff yolk. Then pull of the rear wheels and drums. Behind the rear hubs there are four bolts that hold the axleshaft to the housing. Unbolt them (line the hole in the wheel hub up with the bolt behind it and put your socket through there to gain access to the bolt - do this for each bolt). After the four bolts are removed the axleshafts are free to be pulled out. If you're lucky they might pull out by hand. But if they've been in there for a while you'll have to use a slide hammer to get them out. Make sure you use the correct fitting on the slide hammer to avoid bending the wheel hub. Also be careful not to damage the axle seal or the bearings when you pull out the shaft, these are attached to the axleshaft and if damaged are royal pain in the butt to change. Once your shafts are out, you can remove the bolts on the carrier and pull it out.

Theres a pretty good tech article on this site that covers rebuilding/regearing 9". It steps you through from pulling the wheel to tightening the lug nuts.

There is a much easier way. Jack up only one rear wheel and rotate that tire exactly TWO revolutions and count how many times the driveshaft rotated - that's your ratio. Chalk marks on the brake drum & backing plates helps you count the revolutions easier. You must rotate one tire TWO revolutions, or both tires ONE revolution which is more difficult with an "open" differential.

For those with trac-locs, jack up both rear tires and rotate them ONE revolution and count the driveshaft revolutions.
