Please help
any info that can be passed on to me would be appreciated. I changed my engine in my 77 f-100, I put in a 302 from an 81 and took my old oil pan off of the old engine swapping it onto the replacement engine. My dipstick tube went in behind the alternator and was replaced with one from an auto wrecker since I could not get the old on out. I did an oil change on the truck and put in 6 quarts of oil but the dipstick didn't register a drop. Can anyone tell me the length that the tube or the dipstick should be?? I bought this truck off of a backyard fenagler so there are lots of "get it working repairs" that I want to fix.

Okay, so as I understand it your old dipstick tube is still in place on the '77 engine. You need to measure it and compare the length with the replacement one you got from the auto wreckers. Sounds as if the new one might be longer. If so I would take it back out and cut it to the same length as the old one, and use your old dipstick in it. That should get you pretty close.
Also, compare the dipsticks themselves for length (or did you just buy the tube, not the dipstick?)
