I have just purchased a '92 F-150 with a 5.0 ltr. I'd like to run a true full dual exhaust on it. The truck has dual fuel tanks if that makes a difference. I don't want this post to turn into a discussion of the morals of removing the cats or not, please. All I want to know is how to convert my single exhaust to a true, full, dual exhaust like the Mustangs run. For instance, can I run shorty headers, an h-pipe and mufflers the full length of the truck or maybe run tail pipes out the sides after the mufflers? I'd like to hear from folks who have tried this.
is it possible to run this exhaust? yes. just as you descrbed. h or x pipe it, whatever you prefer and run the pipes out. muffler, glass pack, neither - again it is what you prefer. you can't run the pipes out on both sides before the rear wheels because of the gas tank (unless your remove the tank). i have a 351 that i h piped and ran those straight out the back with 2 15" (i think) glass packs. its loud. one thing i have heard though that is good information, when you go to put your x/h pipe in, before you do, spray the area you would normally put the x/h with spray paint and run the truck. where the paint starts to peal is where you put in the x/h. i was quite interested in this and figured you would be also. i think i heard about this here at FTE.

ps: what is the !!!!!ttt!!!! ?
ive got true duals on my 96 f150/ 302 v8. i had a muffler shop bend up the tail pipes, i cut the factory pipe off right infront of the first cat[first cat is dual in single out] i left the manifolds and factory down pipes in place. off of the down pipes i ran 2 1/4 inch pipe both down the passenger side frame rail, i have two thrush glasspacks[24 inch] before the axle on the passenger side, i connected the pipe for the right bank to the right tail pipe, for the left bank pipe i have a 90 degree bend in the pipe it goes behind the front tank and then with another 90 degree bend it connects to the drivers side tail pipe. my tail pipes exit straight out the back through 28 inch long 3 1/2 inch round chrome tips.
the tail pipes set me back 40 bucks they've got some cheapo ones but these are maderal bent with nice smooth turns, i bought 2 sections of twelve foot straight pipe 15 bucks, 2 glasspacks 19 bucks apeice, and then hangers and clamps about 25 bucks.
shes kindof quiet at idle makes a nice chugging nosie, under full throttle it has a nice deep tone through the 1000-3700 rmp range and then a wicked cackle untill it shifts at 4900-5000 rpms. my buddy said he could hear me getting on it leaveing a stop sign a half a mile down the road from his house.
inside of the truck with the windows up air conditioning on and stereo volume at 25[about 1/4th volume] i can barly hear the truck. i know it can be heard, just for kicks i like to drop it into 2nd and cackle through intersections just to see people look.
with my current exhaust setup the truck gained alittle more power through the hole rpm range, the truck sounds nothing like any mustang ive ever heard, more of a low deep tone then a higher pitched smooth sports car kindof sound.
just a thought why run shortys? theres no real gain to be had, if you want headers pick up some long tubes.
im not sure how loud your wanting to go but im quite happy with my setup.

I have a 94 with 302 from late 80s mustang in it and I put headers on and welded in a bung for the 02 sensor just before the collector on passenger side had to buy a 02 sensor with a longer wires on it to reach connector but they work good and i dont have cats. just used cherry bombs and short pipe and 45% to turn out in front of rear wheels dave
Great, thanks. I was hoping to see h or x pipes in production already from Summit or Jegs but I don't see any in their catalogs. That's what made me wonder if this is even possible. Does anyone know if someone makes one already?

I've not seen any x-over or "H" pipes for the F-series, because most people don't bother with a full lenth dual exhaust because the side/midship tank is in the way.
You could easily go around it by bending your exhaust pipe to go along side of it, putting heat shields between the two (which is just thin steel sheets cut to fit).
I'm (slowly) building a twin-turbo 500cid for my F350 crewcab, and a while back I spent a fair amount of time deciding between full-length duals or a big-honking single, and decided on the latter because of ease of fabrication and the time I don't want to spend on it. I'm going to run 4" front to back, with a 4" inlet/outlet cat with a 4" inlet/outlet glasspack. I like the sound of glasspacks, and because I'll have two turbo's up front, it won't be that loud anyway. Turbo's make nice mufflers
Anyway, good luck in your decision. I'm fairly sure it will require some fabrication. Making an "H" pipe is probably the easiest. You simply measure the distance under the transmission's bell housing between the two down pipes, add the diameter of the downpipes twice plus 1/4", then cut the ends with a hole saw that's the same diameter of the pipes. Mark where you want that to fit between, then holesaw into the side pipes. Slip the crosspipe on over the holes, weld, and you're essentially done.
