My 99 PSD's auto tranny just gave up the ghost, I think. Heres how it happened. I was pulling the biggest load I have ever pulled before (maybe 5k) and it did great all the way home. I backed the trailer into the driveway and when i went to pull up again, it wouldn't.. Checked the fluids and all looks good. Also it seems to want to go into gear but just won't, kind of surges and sometimes will go in when its in 1st. Goes into reverse just fine and doesn't flash the OD light. This is the first sign of any trouble out of it.
What do you guys think.. Is it the Tranny or some kind of sensor I can check.
Also if it is the tranny what do you suggest getting for it. I want the next one to last a long time.
Any help would be greatly apreciated.
Thanks
Chris
By the way it has 234k on it with 1 tranny rebuild already.
Is it cooled back down? You might have overheated the ATF.
Also when you have to maneouver the trailer in reverse use the low range if you have a 4X4, but don't lock the front hubs. The torque multiplication of the low range eliminates the heavy load on the torque converter which makes heat which overheats the ATF.

Very wise choice, mine died not to long ago and made huge mistake letting the dealership put in a Ford reman. While it is better, it's no replacement for a bulletproof tranny. ATS, BD, Suncoast, Jasper Transmissions, Blumenthals transmissions, and TS performance all offer some sort of bulletproof transmission. (TS seems like they've got the best warranty though) Whatever you do, don't let Ford put a new tranny in.
Hey Kwik, I never heard that one before. Thats good to know, I heated up my last one an E40D trying to get my trailer back into a really tight spot.
I will sure use that trick with this truck.
Thanks for the tip.

a quick queston on the tranny, if you pull the shifter into the low position or first will it move then? Been awhile since I was into the EAOD tranny but there should be a sprag in there that is used in first gear if you just put it in drive but when you put it manually into first gear it also applies a clutch that will make that sprag a non issue. If it moves when putting it in manual first but not in drive thats your problem and since it's a mechanical issue it won't flash the O/D light for the electronics. if that is bad it will have symptons similar to what you are talking about like it feels lke it wants to go in gear but won't move, and I would almost bet on that bieng the case. If it is you could replace that sprag, not to difficult and not to pricey although you probably should go ahead and do the clutches and seals too while your in there, but that would get you going in anycase.
i am curious to i fixing to have to buy a trans for my 2001 psd x 4x4. my local trans builder wants $160012mths/unlimited miles(me r&r trans), jasper wants $2315 3 yrs/75,000 miles, monster box $3200 3 yrs/unlimited miles(they say it you can destroy it they fix it free-i am not sure about the labor) but damn thats alot of $. i pull a 33 ft bpull toybox loaded with gear weighs in at about 10k. just got back from spring break and hurt the transmission. just easing it around now trying to decided which way to go! love my trailer/love my excursion i just do not want to tear another transmssion up again! i need everybody's input thanks
When it comes to the transmission, there's no really good cheap way out. My vote is for a BTS. It's one of the expensive ones, but that is all that Brian does, that is -- rebuild the Ford automatics in our trucks. He custom builds it for you depending on what you plan to use it for. He'll stand behind his work too. www.brianstruckshop.com
