So I bought a brand new cellphone from Ebay last week for $294 + $30 shipping + $10 MANDATORY (way to rip off the buyer) insurance = $334 total.
On the same day I bidded, I decided to return the phone (cancel the transaction). I emailed the seller. I only got an automated reply that the item was shipped. I find that strange the bidding ended at 8 pm that day and they say they only ship the thing the next business day.
So anyway, couple of days later the seller said he received my email but unfortunately the item was shipped before he got my email (I doubt it).
But, I was told I can return it as long as I do not open the package and we can "work out something".
So I denied the package at the post office and they shipped it back for free (since it was Priority). I asked the clerk what the seller paid for shipping and insurance and it was no more than $15 (versus the $40 I paid).
Anyway, I tried to work out some sort of refund with the seller but was told: "Sorry, but we cant give you a full refund. We can only refund you the ongoing amount of the phone, which is $255.50. "
What the heck is that? When people buy something at Best Buy, they can open it, use it, and still return it 2 weeks later for a FULL refund.
So I don't understand how I can only get $255 for something I didn't even open the mailing package.
I paid with my credit card. Can I try to stop payment if I can't get my fair shake? What are the card company's policies?
Another reason i dont buy stuff on Ebay. You never really know who you are dealing with, most arent businesses, so their 'rules' are different. I would get back what i could at this point and attribute the rest of the cost to an educational fee.
You really need to read the "sellers" rules for that auction. If they are changing things...then you can get eBay into it. I always use PayPal. That way you can object to the auction and you are protected.
Just re-read the auction and the rules with it. If they are telling you the samething...then you are stuck. If not, then you can file a complaint with eBay.
Did the Ebay seller have a return policy stated in the offering? Everything I sell on Ebay has the terms clearly stated which include "No Returns". I strongly encourage bidders to ask me questions to death before bidding, including asking for additional pictures. Ebay works very well when buyers and sellers are 100% honest and act in good faith during their business. I suppose in your case you could call your credit card and stop payment. Before I got too aggressive with any threats concerning damaging the sellers feedback (as he can do the same with yours), I'd make every reasonable effort to work it out. This would include getting ebay involved if needed. Calling the credit card company and witholding payment will almost guarantee that the seller gives you negative feedback.
*You don't mention why you changed your mind after the sale . This may affect the outcome of this deal.
Buyer Beware is right, made a purchase recently on a grill for my truck, got it for $30 which is hell of a deal but when I asked for a shipping quote, I was e-mailed a quote of $200 to ship it to Canada. Quickly e-mailed back a said forget it unless you send a more accurate (and reasonable) quote. After this is settled I will NEVER shop at E-bay again, too many things can go wrong even if it is a really good deal, and for the most part you really can't trust anyone.
Why, WHY do people ask the questions AFTER they do the purchase??? Always assume that you are dealing with crooks on ebay, then you MIGHT comeout okay. I and my company have a company store on eBay and we have 100% good feedback from our customers. Then again, we do what we say we will do on a sale. I will make an item look bad just to make sure that the buyer gets a fait shake. Unfortunatually, not all sellers are like that. If you email a question, expect an answer within 24 hours. No answer? Go on to another seller...be very aware!
Caveat emptor--The idea that buyers take responsibility for the condition of the items they purchase and should examine them before purchase. This applies not only to the quality of the product, but the terms and conditions of the sale.
I've bought and sold many items on eBay and have never had a problem. I have excellent feed back rating as a seller and and buyer and only deal with other sellers/buyers with a feed back rating of 100% or very near.
Check out the seller before you buy. Otherwise, tough luck.

I do many transactions on eBay. You just need to know what to look for. As BPofMD stated, ask before you buy.
We're all out on eBay for the deal. Shipping is where they can make their profit (I work for a shipping software company, I'm fully aware). If you want to pay full retail, shop at Best Buy.
I believe you can contact Ebay about it and they will help you with your problem. I know my wife buys her school books on Halfcom apart of ebay and has had to go to ebay before.
People say to just ask ther seller if you want to know somethiung.
Well I am not so naive to think that someone 3000 miles away in another country will be above Lieing to me to make a sale.
Once the item has been paid for unless you have a someone local to take care of this for you any transaction can become a nightmare just as any transaction can become a dream come true.
Not on Ebay mind you,but the one that irritates me is having some American tell some Canadian to send it C.O.D. through the transport company thinking we're not smart enough to know about that scam

Gadzooks, those there Americans! Trying to pull the wool over your eyes they are.
It's aboot time we Camericanadians put a stop to this!!
So much for sympathy, eh? Man, what a tough crowd. However. I'm within minutes of ordering a crank, rods, and pistons on E-Bay. It seems that once a week or so, there's a question or comment on here about buying stuff through EB. Kinda got me nervous, I must say. So, what I did was pick up a telephone and speak with the seller personally, read the feedback comments, etc. Then I went one further and had my father-in-law go to their place of business and check them out (just lucky, I know, that he happens to live in the same SoCal town as this place). I'm using pay-pal, also. I'm not nervous anymore, just anxious to get my parts so I can get on with building the stroker.
> But, I was told I can return it as long as I do not open the package and we can "work out something".
I have 98% feedback and 100 sales. I think the seller was very nice to allow you to return it, I probably would not have. I would have told you to keep it as all my sales are final and if you had a problem with anything you should have asked before you bid, as my auction states.
It is an auction, not a retail store.
E-Bay is not Best Buy and it is not governed by local and state laws or consumer protection laws. Most E-Bay sellers do not have a dedicated staff to hold your hand to help you decide on your purchase and with your whims.
I have e-mailed sellers about the TOTAL cost of an item including the S&H and insurance BEFORE I bid. If it is excessive and I can not pick it up, I do not buy it or bid on it. Or I tell them they are crazy and I hope they like looking at it.
Like ANY other auction, it is buyer beware. Consider this a cheap learning experience, it could have been worse. You could have bid on a car.
