Can anyone tell me exactly where the oil dipstick is supposed to be on a 390? The one I'm working on currently has it installed in the oil pan. I purchased a new pan and it does not have a dipstick tube in it. So I'm assuming that it was originally installed somewhere else. Any help would be appreicated.
There should be a hole on a boss at the front of the block that will receive the dipstick tube. It may have a small freeze plug in it if it had the dip stick in the pan.
The "boss" is the WAR DEPARTMENT or the wife, don't ever forget.
The flat area just below the oil filter adapter should have a press in plug if the 391 truck pan is used. In order to read full on this dipstick location you'll be running 13 1/2 quarts oil. I use a 391 pan on a 410 build with the front dipstick and welded up the pan holes, no problems or leaks running 13 1/2 quarts but then there are baffles and windage tray added to the pan to prevent oil splashing up the rear cylinders.
.....=o&o>.....
Whoa! That sounds interesting, I have a windage tray as well but would be happy puting the dipstick back in the stock location. Interstingly enough when I pulled the clutch out I was told that my engine might be the truck version (391) but that the blocks were identical. Thanks for being more specific I'll try and find the right spot. If anyone else can help (picture) or word picture. I'd be gratefull.
