Does anyone have the cheaper version of a sandblast cabinet? I am looking for an all purpose unit that will also pass media or plastic bead... I think I have seen them before around $250? How well do they work?

Sounds like you're looking for an off-the-shelf unit. If you'd like to build one yourself, I just submitted an article to Ken showing how to build a 4'x4'x4' blasting cabinet for about $450. I use it for everything from frame parts to sheet metal. I wanted it big enough to hold most parts from my 1956 F-250. I'm doing my wheels now and did the rear axle last winter by letting one end stick out the side port and using a garbage bag and duck tape to keep the grit and dust in. Very versatile.
Eric, thanks for the link! Lotsa blasting stuff in there! I would like to price out one locally or at least find out if I can build my own to my specs, using parts from one of these suppliers.

You can check that website to see if there are any stores near enuf to you. I was in one today here in KC, bought a few giant wrenches, std impact sockets, impact wobble, and a replacement 3/8" Torque wrench. My daughter got mine out and used it for a ratchet:-( The big heavy Harbor Freight tools seem to hold up well, better than Crapsman and one H$&% of a lot cheaper. If you are carefull and inspect stuff b4 you buy you can find some decent tools. I have one of their 40lb pressurized sand blast units.
The unit is very simply and robustly built, with easily serviced and replaced parts. The controls are easily adjusted. It is very mobile and easily used. All I needed to use it is a good 2 real HP or 3-5 fake HP compressor. You won't get a 100% duty cycle but you have to turn the parts sometime :-) The only thing I still plan to do with it is change the location of the pressure relief valve to get it away from the grit during filling and also off the tank. I will have to buy a tee and close nipple to do it. I don't want the grit fouling the pressure relief. I will eventually need another blast hood to protect myself.
