7 hours for me. could of been shorter had i not removed the transfer case from tranny.
had to respect the wishes of the hobby shop on base supervisor.

had i done it at home i would of left it on.

your gonna need a buddy or 4 arms.

Well, 1997F-350, unfortunatley for me those days are over. Had surgery on my shoulder a couple of years ago and working under a rig nowdays just aint as much fun as it used to be. I put an engine and 4-speed in a '65 F-100 a couple of weeks ago and it took me twice as long as it should have. I don't mind working on the top side but over my head is about out of the question. From reading your last post sounds like you are in the millitary and the countdown must be when you are discharged?

Can someone give me a general idea of mileage that the dual mass flywheel last, for work truck and personal trucks? What are the signs that it is going?

Thanks.

I am a little ignorant on the dual mass fly wheels. How do you check it and can you tell by driving if there is a problem?

when you shut it off it sounds like a can of rocks getting rattled and the very hard clutch pedal are usually the easy signs.

the clutch job isnt too bad just have to have a tranny jack. 5-8hrs

remember that dual mass wieghs about 100lbs when you get it off there.....

Is the only way to check for the play between the two to pull the tranny?

100 lbs of flywheel, that weighs more then most trannys.
Thanks.

its been about 7 years since ive had to but when you look up at the flywheel you can see the two sections of the flywheel and you can wiggle them back and forth between the 2 sections while its in the truck.

the tranny and transfer case wiegh about 500lbs togethor.

barebackjake, do you remember how many miles were on your truck and were they hard pulling miles or basic commuting miles. Thanks again.

nope pull the inspection plate off the bottom. put tranny in neutral and ebrake on. you will see what moves.
my dmfw that i just removed had 20,000 miles on it and the clutch disk was fine not worn a bit but the throw out bearing was toast and i had about 3/4 inch of play. i needed a new clutch to handle the stage 1's though. i wish someone made a better disk for the dmfw. and they didnt get so much play so soon cause i loved mine.
the smfw take a little getting used to. but well worth it imho.

I also don't like to pay to have something done that I could do myself, however it is a trade off, I could do it and pay for it in pain or let someone do the hard stuff and keep myself in better shape for the things I can do easily. I live in the country and have six acres to keep up(mow, weed eat, cut firewood, used to split it but bought a wood splitter and work in my private salvage yard not to mention my job at the highway department) so this flywheel job I will farm out. Not complaining but you asked. Hey I was in the Navy also from '71 to '75 you get to see some real nice places and some not so nice, huh? Now back to truck stuff, you think the down pipe off a 2000 will fit on my 96? A guy at work put a different one on his and said I could have his old one, I have already gave the cat and the resonator the axe. That should be the last kink in the hose.

Lowdog a downpipe off a 2000 will not fit in the old body style it is really tight. You will have to work over the firewall just to get a 3 inch in there I believe that the 2000 has a 4 inch and is bent all wrong.
