How do you get the shift lever out of the collar? I see the pin but can't figure out how to remove it. If the indention on the end of the pin is supposed to be an allen head it's been biggered up and ain't anymore. I will be putting a different (non-rusty) lever back on, so I don't want to drill it out, unless, of course it really is a screwed up allen head.
Thanks.
If it's the same as my 75 F100 (Australia)the collar is spring loaded and hooks onto the pin. Just push down hard on the collar and turn anticlockwise. The lever and collar should then just lift up out of the gearbox.
there are two kinds, one unscrews, the other you have to push down really hard then turn counterclickwise and it pops up, if it doesn't unscrew, then you aren't pushing down hard enough. and DONT try to pull it up, it will tear the tabs off, trust me

As mentioned one cap unscrews, the other is spring loaded. Sounds like you have the NP-435 which is the spring loaded variety. Here is a handy reference to help you determine which you have:
To remove the shift lever, simply push down sharply on the center steel insert which surrounds the lever and twist it and it should pop out (I can never recall if it must turn clock-wise or counter-clockwise, but looking at the diagram in the above link, it does come off by turning it ccw, and it is called the "cap"). BTW -those pins you mention are not designed for removal. I hope this helps.

Steve are you referring to a column three speed, or a floor four speed shifter? The one thing that raised the flag for me was "non-rusty". The floor sticks are painted and could just be repainted, but the colummn are chrome plated and would need to be replaced.

In the still cool hours of the night,
you can hear chevys rusting away.
thats just a roll pin the goes thru the shifter to hold it in but i dunno if you can just take it out without springs and other parts falling all over the floorboard, but you just use a punch and hammer to push the roll pin out
