I had that combo and didn't really care for it. The power band for the 351 is quite wide and flat. The M50d is designed for a more peakier tork band. I just changed out to a NP435 and couldn't be more thrilled. My fuel economy about the same, but I have better gearing and best of all, granny gear. If it were me, this is the route I'd go. Spent $80 on tranny, $60 on Dana 21 transfer case, $40 on bell housing, and sold Mazda tranny for $200. Win/win for me.

I wouldn't say the M5 was designed for a peakier tq band....they don't design them around that....it's just that it's a typical 5 spd tranny w/o granny gear.

I liked the M5/351 combo because i could drive it w/o really going above like 1800 rpm if I didn't want to.

Personal preference....

Maybe it was just me, but for the 302 I had in it origionally, the 5 speed was fine except for the reverse. With the 351, first was too low and second was a little too tall. I also have 3.55 gears, so that played a factor as well, I'm sure. The 302 had a lot narrower torque band than the 351. Now I have a granny gear and a very good reverse gear-great for a farm truck. BTW, granny gear comes in very useful in Sacramento's rush hour.

One more thing, perhaps because I had about 320,000 miles on the truck when I did the engine swap, the tranny started to give me problems after the swap. It started out whining, then the sincros started acting up, finally, the front seal started leaking. Can't complain too much about the tranny because it held up trouble free for approx 370,000 miles and never did take a dump on me, but it was going. I heard the m5od really weren't made strong enough to be behind a 351, and using it for farm work really taxed it even more.
