Just wondering if anyone out there has an autistic child. our 3 yr old was just diagnosed and sometimes i wanna strangle him lol. the thing i have a hard time handling are the temper tantrums and screaming for no reason. any help as to how you handle it would be gratly appreciated.
Our middle child is 16 and Autistic. It's going to be a long road dad- but well worth it in the end. As far as the tantrums go- just made sure the child is in a place where he/she can't hurt themselves or anyone else around, take a deep breath, and let them work their way out of it. I can almost guarantee raised voices and conventional discipline won't work- although time-outs were pretty effective for us (still are, as a matter of fact).
In the long run, the tantrums are going to be the least of your worries. You're going to be on an intimate, first name basis with your doctor and your school district for the next 15 years or more, so it's good to get a game plan together. The first thing we was research, the second was start a file- you will need to document darned near everything when it comes time for junior to hit school, and you will be fighting City Hall the whole way to get the child the help they need.
pm or email me if you need more info- my wife is also a Special Ed teacher. I believe there are a few others here on FTE.
