hey everyone, i have a 79 400M, came out of a 79 f-150 which was a great truck, until i rolled it then it just became a problem and a half haha.....the guy i bought it off of, filled every nook and cranny with expando foam so when it rolled all the seams in the cab cracked and upon futher inspection almost everythin that could break...did......so i had no choice but to junk the truck just recently .....that was my 1st truck so it was kinda difficult, but Im just curious what would be needed to throw the 400m into lets say ealry 90s bronco......The amount of work isn't a problem, i live for this kinda thing...any help would be apperciated...! thanks
it would be a trail truck, my bad should've mentioned thathave a solid front axle for it also, just like the broncos soo much, i figure it would be fun to see if it can work
well if you are willing to tackle this go for it. just know that it is a bunch of work. that motor never came in those rigs past 82. you will need the tranny of course as well
Im guessing i need the transfercase outta a 79 also?, i mean if im goin from E.F.I to carb i just ditch the E4OD and the computer right and just use the drive line from a 79 f-150 or 250 to the brocno? correct me if im wrong haha
at this point you can do what ever you want. so yes that sounds about right. you might stick with the electric fuel pump setup and run a different regulator or have some injector bungs welded to your intake and get a stand alone efi setup would be suit for that motor. im sure there is some info on that. but still get rid of that tranny would be smart
thankx for the info, the standalone E.F.I. setup sounds like great idea! i just called my friend to tell him to get the motor over to my house A.S.A.P.to start the process, and the bronco site is very informative, i think im just goin to read for the next 4 hours haha, thanx again!!!
as an aside, why is illegal to transplant a motor in the US?
Because for the most part we have inspection ***** And if every little hose or part is not hooked up like it rolled off the asymbly line then its not right.
I have seen people restore some old trucks and they get much better MPG than it did from the factory, and when they sniff it it puts out less crap than some newer trucks, but when the *****..er inspectors do the visual check, they fail it.
ofcoarse most of us do what we want, cause most states havent gone to the hard core inspections, and we can get away with it, like down here in texas, nobody bothers me.

ah ok, thats makes sense (I was going to say fair enough, but realised it wouldn't be correct!). We have emmissions test but not with a visual for emmissions. The visual is on drivetrain, safety equipment, lights, mirrros, tyres etc.
Basically, if it doesn't look factory where i live(Its mostly the town really) it wouldn't pass, when i got my old truck inspected, it was 10 dollars and a sticker just because it was a 79 but if i went with a 92 bronco with the same motor drivetrain and everythin of a 79 f-150 it would not pass at all....
I would really think twice about the fuel injection. Theirs folks spending a lot of time and $$ trying to fuel inject a 400...and they are not there yet. you got enough going on to keep you busy...i'd heard you can use the same type tranny with a part thats available but would need one for a 460. I'd certainly want to look at the specs in the motor rather than worry about injection. the 400 can be an incredible motor. Also you can get hei ignition on ebay for abut $120 and that gets rid of the computer etc. Just did that with my kids '83 bronco with the Windsor and will be putting one on my 400 build- 2 wires- 12 volt lead from key and tach out. Can't get much easier than that- I bet we pulled over 500 yards of wire out of that bronco.
For a serious trail rig (which is where yours appears to be headed) EFI beats any carb hands down. I'm running aTBI setup on my current 400 trail rig, but am building a stroked 400 now that will have a similar MPFI setup to what Jopes has on his 400, and which he recently dynoed and got impressive numbers with. If you are a good junkyard scrounger, putting Ford-based EFI on the 400 is not difficult or particularly expensive.
