Won't start unplugged

I have a 2000 F550 7.3 PSD that has been starting harshly since July and has got worse. It runes very poorly all the time and has 180,000mls on the clock. Now it will only start if it is plugged in for a min of 3 hours and clanks at that, at initiall start up. I have changed GPs, GPRs, Fuel Filter, Oil Pressure regulator, air filter, and have had about !/2 dozon oil changes. I took it to the dealer and with no SES lights on they said that it might be the injectors and want 4000 for the job. I brought the truck home and said that sounds like an expencive guess. Since I have purchased a High Pressure Oil Pump for 500 bucks yesterday and have found this web site before starting the replacement. Do you guys think that this would solve my problem or do you think it would be something else?

Runs smooth at Idle, changed Turbo 10,000mls ago, I read something about checking oil level in HPOP, going to check that in the AM. Don't know what else to do. Thanks for any help you can give.

There's lots of things it could be and the folks here at FTE will probably troubleshoot better than me, but I had a similar problem (wouldn't start below 30*F without being plugged in and took time to warm up to where it wasn't "loping"). I started down the same line...GPs, GPR, Filters, etc., tested my batteries and they tested good under static. Finally got fed-up and changed the batts. (were 3 yrs old) on a whim...been good since and starts good down to 5*F. Might not work for everybody...but it worked for me!

If I don't don't have mine plugged in right now for at least a couple hours it is very, very hard to start. 4 of my glow plugs are bad. I see that you said you changed the gp, I would double check that they are good. Very easy and quick to do.

When my SD was running poorly, I changed the CPS. It was working itermittently for a few weeks before it died - truck lacked power (You could stay on the throttle and hear the turbo, but the truck had a hard time getting much past 45mph) and ran rough under throttle. I drained the float bowl and then replaced the fuel filter - both to no avail. After a few weeks of this, my CPS died and took several minutes for me to get it restarted. The dealer put in a new one and the engine was back to normal - smooth and strong! For the few weeks, though, I never got a check engine light - until it stalled and took lots of time to restart.

Unfortunatly it started doing this in July, so outside temp is not a factor, and I have also installed 2 new batteries and an alternator, and starter sounds healthy as can be and my electronic RPM controller reads about 240-300 rpms during crank.

I have replaced the CPS once a few months ago and tried swaping CPSs with a buddy that has no problems with his, his truck ran fine with mine and my truck had no difference. I would think that it's the HPOP or is there a High Pressure Fuel Pump in the truck?

How about the Injection Control Pressure sensor(ICP). It's located in the left front high pressure oil rail. Works in a closed loop with the oil pressure regulator.

Afew months ago it was at the dealer and they replaced injector #1 and the wiring harness on the driver's side as they said it was grounding out, this time I have no smoke at least nothing like that time. at that time I had a SES light come on as well. Sympoms are different this time.

What kind of glow plugs didyou use. I found that aftermarket plugs will read good but are actually no good. I only use Ford glow plugs

All parts are OEM from Ford dealership, usually Ford Motorcraft red and black packages, unless the are remanufactured parts but still from Ford dealer parts, except oil and fuel filters, I use the fleet brand.

no SES lights this time, that would make things to easy , I just checked the oil level in the HPOP and it is at about 1" from the top, I haven't cranked it for about 24hours.
