2000 excursion dead batteries

ok----i know this one will be hard to help me out based on what info im giving you--but it's all i know for now and thought i'd post it to try and get some ideas. here's what i heard. friends 2000 excursion with 7.3 has dead batteries all the time; always jump started as result. napa batteries. just started happening..i BELIEVE their new napa batteries that were put in as a result of this not sure though...anyways--he always has to jump start it ..my thoughts are alternator and batteries..FIRST--batteries could be bad right off the shelf..who knows how long they've been on the shelf. so tomorrow im going to do a load test and capacitance test on them to see how they are. SECOND--alternator could be bad. i havent' learned about alternators yet so i dunno how to use a vat machine on them, but those are my two possible thoughts as of now..any help would be great based on what little info i gave..

thanks.

charge the batteries then load test them, then test the alternator. if they both test goo dyou need to test with key off for a parasitic draw. something is staying on that is running down the batteries. ie glove box light, dome light, glow plug relay sticking, or somthing else that is malfunctioning cause the battery to be drawn down.
