I am going to be installing a new fuel pump in my truck which has 138k mi on the clock. The tank is over 9 years old and came original with the truck, don't know if it has rust on the inside but near as I can see from the gas it appears clean.
I read an install guide on fuel pumps and it said that the tank should be proffesionaly cleaned when the pump is installed, I would rather spend the $200 and replace the tank.
P.S. I would take the tank off and have a look at it. If it looked fine I would maybe rinse it out with some gas and then put it back on. Do you live in an area where they use salt on the road? If not, you should be fine.
The last two that I did, I did not even get all the fuel out. Both were running rigs that the pumps died on. I think a rinse would be more than sufficient, after all, the truck was running on the gas in the tank!! Just check for excess sediment or debris in the bottom.
