correct the dust cover is there to allow access to drain the oil from the convertor, check the ring gear, keep out mud and debris.i guess what i mean is maybe the stator and rotor broke, or maybe the trans. mainshaft messed up somthing. i just do not know how to diagnose that type of problem. the only thing i could think of is maybe remove the convertor drain plug, but i doubt any thing but oil would come out.

Thanks for all the help guys. im hopefully gonna pull the engine this weekend and tear it down. when i find out what the problem was ill let ya guys know since oppinions were pretty wide spread, i know its always interesting to see who was right =)

This exact same thing happen to my old 390. What happened was that the a rod broke and broke the cam. this in turn messed up all of the other pistons. You could turn the crank about 40 degrees. It would go down until one rod was jammed between the piton and head and then back until another rod was jammed. When i was driving the engine just slow to a stop.hopefully this didn't happen to u because it messed up my block real bad
