78 4x4 track bar bushing shot. Tried to replace one and screwed it up. What is the correct procedure to install new bushing? New Track Bar Assembly $400 +... the Bushings are only $14. The rubber on the new bushing seems huge ..tried to taper bushing by grinding but didn't work too well... still driving but klunks when I turn the wheel..Hope u can help!
There should be two bushings one with a small hole in it and one with a large hole in them. the larger hole one goest down and the axle tube and the small bushing goes up on the frame next to the power steering gear box. For each bushing there should be two poly pieces and a metal sleeve put the poly bushings in the trac arm then push the metal sleeve into the poly bushings then slide it on the bolt then do the same on the other end of trac arm.
hey what's up?, yes by all means use the poly urethane bushings these are my far the best way to go, they are very simple to install compared to the factory piece. throw that factory piece away in the trash. the only way to get that thing installed is the dealer has to freeze it or heat it up to get it coaxed into that little hole. i forget it's been a long time. these poly bushings will by faar out last the factory piece hands down. later. C.J.
Freezing it? Man, what is all that about? I did the track bar bushings on my 78 in about 35 minutes! The top one was gone, and the bottom one I just burned out. The new ones by Energy Suspension just popped right in, using the supplied grease. Put the metal thingys inside and bolt them back up and it's done! Nothing hard about it. Energy Suspensions pitifal intsructions were still plenty to make it painless.
i was refering to the factory bushing that's used on the frame side, the rubber factory bushing just cant be hammered in. i know i been down that road more than once before going to the poly bushing. see ya C.J.
Oh, i've never used a factrory rubber before. if i'm gunna do it, might as well do it with class huh.. The energy suspensions didn't require any amount of squashing to get them in..
