Any body who has been in the military knows what your feeling. You have those second thoughts sometimes -"LIKE what the hell am I doing". But in the long run you'll be glad you did. It's an experience of a life time. And you'll have more pride in knowing you accomplished something that most people have not. It turned me from a boy into a man and I'm not joking you feel different when your done. I'm an Ex-Marine Sergeant 6 years in( 87-93). You'll learn more about the world than those who just sit and watch it on the boob-tube. You'll understand why we are so privileged to live in this great country of ours and you'll be part of the reason for that. Good luck and You'll be glad you did it . You'll find some of the best friends(true friends) than you will ever meet again or have in life. They will be from all parts of this great country with loads of diversity and it will actually let you find out who you really truly are as a person. Sincerely, Todd
Be prepared to be homesick after the first or second day. I remember sitting on my bed just before lights out, the second day and thinking I was alone and wouldn't adjust. The funny thing is...EVERYONE ELSE in there is feeling the same. Don't worry, it'll be OK after you start to make a couple new friends. Good luck and be safe.
Guys, he aint gone yet! He's just going to MEPS to do his physical and choose a job.
Wezol, this is a huge step in the whole process. Congrats on your progress thus far. Please let us know when you do ship out, and what you are going to be doing.
All I'm gonna say is keep your head corked on straight. Take this from someone who's been through that particular ordeal twice. When they sit you down to talk over jobs and contracts have a firm idea of what you want to do with your life for the next 4 or 6 years, cuz that's it. If you wanna be a mechanic, don't let them talk you into being a cook, even if they do offer you a $20k bonus.
That aside, thanks for raising your hand and saying "I will." I'll appreciate you being beside me when the stuff hits.
Well Im back and MEPs went pretty flawless overall. I did it at Ft. Sam Houston. This whole time Ive been planning (and been told) that I would be able to get a slot pretty quick after May 8th, so I could be back in time for the fall semester. I would go through Basic and Infantry, and come back mid August.
Well when the counsler went to put it in the computer he said the EARLIEST ship date was August 18th. That was a big surprise to me, and they also tacked on Airborne School (which I was very happy about) because of my assigned unit. I told them I wasnt going to sign anything because it was such a surprise and I wasnt expecting to have to make a descision to skip a semester in college in 10 minutes.
I said I would sit on it for a few days. Im 99% sure I am going to call them on Monday and do it.
Ill be going in as 11B w/airborne with the 143rd Inf. Div. (LRS)
This is EXACTLY what I wanted, the only con was the ship date. Leave on 20060808 and get back 20061202.
Hell I wasnt even expecting to do Airborne until the next summer or so but Ive got the chance to do what Ive been wanting to do and I want to take it before its too late. I especially dont want to lose my slot in the LRS.
