New Engine Time...

Well, the sparkplug ejection flaw has claimed another victim. I helicoiled it once, but now even the helicoil blew out. The head is shot and with 190k miles it would just be asking for trouble to replace the heads. I'd like to put a low mileage used engine in. My mechanic has found an '01 and an '04. The engine shop says the '04 will not work for my application. He doesn't know if it was out of the new body style or the Heritage model. I know that would make a difference. Is there any way to find out if the '04 is from a Heritage and if not would it still work anyway? (I'd like to get away from the pre-'03 engines since they could still potentially have the plug ejection problem.)

A non-Heritage 5.4 (new body style) is a 3 valve per cylinder engine and will look totally different than yours. If it's a Heritage it should work but you will probably have to use your old sensors, possibly intake manifold etc.
By 2001 the plug problem was pretty much fixed I think.

He said the 2004 engine had 2 valves per cylinder meaning it's a Heritage. I thought the plugs weren't fixed till '03?

Remember, the '04 Heritage Edition's horsepower ratings were lower than the 260 HP that the '01-'03 2V 5.4 liter engines had. Check it for yourself, I have an '04 heritage brochure at home, and I was surprised when I looked at the HP ratings.

The plug problem, for the most part, was fixed in 2000 or 2001 with the PI heads.

Well, I went with the '01 engine. I'm just going to be as paranoid as Keith Richards taking a pee test when it comes to the plugs this time. Total price will probably be around the $3500 range.
