What would cause a lifter to break? I pulled the intake back off my 352 and I found one of the lifters broke in half. It broke towards the bottom. Eric
I've never seen a lifter break but I would think a mix of high RPMs and very weak valve springs could possibly do it. Could have also been defective from the factory.
Are you talking about the hydraulic lifter which rides on the cam or the push rod which goes between the lifter and rocker arm? Please clarify. Also, there is a tech article discussing bent push rods in the FE series engines.

That doesn't sound good. I'd have to think the cam is in pretty rough shape if that happened. What happened to the broken parts, or perhaps the better question might be "where" are the broken parts?

I got all the broken parts out except for the retaining clip I have no idea where it went. I don't see any damage to the cam if I replace it what cam do you guys recamend? Thanks Eric
I had a lifter that was sticking in one spot. The exhaust on the #5 wouldn't move freely, so I had to deburr the passage. They should move up and down under their own weight, the side of the hole has the oil passage that can get gummed up. Either way, check the movement on each lifter.
I use the Crower Beast 292, it has very aggressive midrange torque, but Crane 268H and 272H are good choices as well. Dual pattern cams are a good choice for the FE, more exhaust lift and dur. Match the cam to your most used rpm range, I picked 1300~3800 because mine is a heavy truck and that's where I need the power. Don't forget the consider the other items you're running (headers, compression ratio...), a mismatched cam is not ideal.
I showed it to my teacher at school he worked around metal and stuff. He said the way it broke and that part of the break was shiny and part dull he said it was probably already cracked. I put a new lifter in and it runs good no backfires and all the valves are working. Eric
