The * was because at the time, baseball fans were racist, and because the record was broken in more games than the Babe actually set it in.
The olympics take back medals if they find out you used steroids. So why the hell don't other sports do the same. You can't penalize the whole team by taking back wins, so fire the offender, and remove his name from the books. I don't think he even deserves a *. The same should go for any other pro athlete that used steroids, knowing they were illegal, and bad for you.
My .02: Bonds did steroids, no ifs, and or buts. Steroids do not help a player hit the ball, but they do help a player hit it a lot further. The also greatly decrease the amount of time it takes for the body to recover to full strength. This is a huge advantage over a long season. Bonds first came into the league in 1986. Between '86 and '00 he hit 50 or more homeruns in a season how many times? ZERO. So Bonds goes from never hitting 50 in a season to 73 as he is entering the latter part of his career. And there are still those of you who do not believe he was on steroids? This is a disgraceful act, by all who use steroids, that severley damages the integrity of the game. Steroids = cheating period. For you NASCAR fans, steroids in baseball would kind of be like you favorite driver nitrous in his car, do you think that might make a huge difference in the performance of the car and give an unfair advantage?
Munky, I disagree with you completely. Leave the man alone? Are you serious? These are major allegations and there is a lot of proof against him. In his own words he said he used the clear and the cream but didn't know they might be steroids, his trainer (BALCO) gave them to him. Please, there is no way he did not exactly what he was doing. Media blowing this out of proportion? How? This man cheated and by doing so set the single season record and is closing in on the all time record. You can't blow that out of proportion, it's huge. Oh, and steroids were never allowed in MLB and they were not legal when he used them. They just didn't test for them because neither the owners or players association cared. It took congressional hearings to get anything done. This whole thing makes me sick, I can hardly to stand to watch a game anymore. Baseball better clean up the game or I am done with them, and while I can't speak for anyone else I doubt I would be alone in this thinking.
I dont get why he had to take steroids. be a man and live up to your accomplishments, whether they make a record book or not. He should be glad he got that chance to play pro, as alot of people, probably just as good as him, never did get that chance.
overpaid whining asses that get paid millions of dollars for playing stick & ball sports......pardon me while i don't give a rat's ***
Most of the time I'd agree with you, but, Baseball is part of America. Its something guys talk about while working on their cars, and can pass the love of the game on to their kids. After all, they still call it, "Americas favorite pass time"
So something that is that engrained with Americana, I stand up and take notice. Do they get paid to much, probably. Players used to have jobs in the off season, but then again, that was a much shorter season, with no night games.
I agree with what has been said before....Bonds should be stripped of any achievements that he has made thus far....and any others like him. Hall of fame, right! Let someone achieve this that does it on the up and up...and baseball is not the only sport guilty of these infractions....We would all be surprised if we really knew the truth. Mcguire, Sosa and all of the others....really have something to be proud of, huh?
....Steroids do not help a player hit the ball, but they do help a player hit it a lot further.
Are you sure you're not user DOHCmarauder incognito??? J/K
On second thought, I doubt it. DOHCmarauder LOST the 'steroid use' argument in the last thread, and wouldn't dare show himself in this one! Boohoohoo-whine-snivel-cry.
Actually TXPSD, they do (help a player hit the ball).
The players at the forefront of this scandal all had improved Hits, RBI'S, and OBP's during the height of the abuse (2000-2001, see Baseball-Reference.com). Not only that, but these players also excelled/succeeded at hitting the ball to their opposite fields...a feat which takes tremendous strength and agility.
Yep, I'm for the asterisk.....a big one. The (future) Home-Run Leader Board Index should read like thus:
Barry Bonds - - - - 756*
P.S. DOHC,
Excuse me while I go take a pill and become SUPER FIREFIGHTER!!!! Hahaha.....

I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict Barry will never reach his 756 this season; He's old, he's outta shape, he's broken-down, and the most important factor, IMO - he's off the 'roids. I call this Bret-Boone-Fatallia.
From TheRocketScience Dictionary of Made-up Terms: Bret-Boone-Fa·tal·lia 1. A syndrome linked to the abrupt halt of an athlete's steroid regiment, causing the mind and body to become 'out of sinc', never to recover. 2. An uncontrolable downward spiral in his or hers performance.
I'm beginning to think he may not even reach Ruth this season. Have you seen him bat yet? He is swinging at junk and striking out more than usual. I also watched him play (the Braves) the other day. While he was still able to chase down the flies, he ran all the way to the dugout (almost) before coming to a complete stop. What happens when he has to catch, turn and throw all within a few steps? I think he's gonna snap something...
On the other hand...
take a look at all the historical baseball "greats" and tell me if you REALLY believe their lives were lived any better and that they were any better than what bonds did...
I agree with you, things weren't so perfect back then either.
I'm not a big Bonds fan, but there were & are other villians in Baseball & other sports.
Remember the Black Sox Scandal, that did not happened yesterday.
Ty Cobb wasn't a prince.
