i am running 39.5" trxus on my 90 f150 (i know the TTB cant handle that, thats why i am putting new front and rear axles) and am needing to know if i should put the 9" rear end out of an early 80's f150 on my truck or if i can safely keep the 8.8" i have now. i dont do any rock crawling, i live in louisiana, just run in the mud evey now and then, but i want to lock my rear end and run 456 or 488 gears in both dif's. will i kill the factory axle? thanks guys.
Post in the axle forum and you will get more replies. But I would suggest upgrading axles to at least 3/4 ton running gear with those tires. A 9" would probly work for very mild use but I would run larger if you are planning the swap anyway. Let us know what you do.
You're right at the limits of what a 9" or a solid Dana 44 can handle. As long as you're doing a swap, just like fully_loaded says, you may as well throw some bigger axles at it.
sorry for the wrong forum....the only reason i don't want to go to 1 ton axles is because i just bought wheels that are 5 lug. you know how it is, i scored a ridiculous deal on the tires and wanted them on as soon as possible. don't really want to have to buy another set of wheels, but i might have to. thanks guys.
thanks, thats the kind of info i wanted. what kind of wheeling do you do johnsonswamp? how much power and what gears do you have? a 351W is in the works and i don't want to kill my axles when i get more power. where did you get your axle shafts from? sorry for so many questions, i am on a budget though and cant afford to redo things like wheels, and would rather not buy 3/4 or 1 ton parts right now. thanks
Just get a 31 spline Trac Loc and a set of Moser or Strange Axles. Weld the axles tubes and get a rear girdle support. You should have enought rear to hold plenty. But then again I drag race my 8.8. I am sure the loads are way different.
