I have been hearing about that story, as I live in the area. The punishment fits the crime. The punishment....Knowing you killed someone, having to remember every day the lifeless body laying on the ground.
Taking your child out for their first driving lesson is a big deal, it is important to get the proper permits, and teach them what to expect when they are in the drivers seat. That girl wouldn't have been any more prepared to operate that vehicle if she were a few months older, or had passed the Penndot written test and had a legal permit. She panicked, the accident happened, and now two familes have experienced a profound tragedy.
Sending anyone to jail for that crime, and it was a crime, would be pointless, a jail sentence can't erase what happened, I assume no malice was intended, it was a tragic accident.

I read about this a few days back. The judge went easy on the dad because it was clearly an accident and he's generally a good guy. He made a small mistake which went very very wrong. Not hard to imagine that the driver and the dad both panicked.

How 'bout the victim huh? Her last move was as impressive as it was fatal. Very sad.

There's got to be a better way! Xbox/Playstation simulator anyone?

There is a better way! An empty parking lot at 630 AM on a Sunday morning, about 90 circles, 100 figure eights, 100 back-ups, etc. Then find the widest street, in the least populated area, preferably, a quiet weekend in an industrial park for road skills practice.

I learned to drive in my fathers lap on country backroads. I also learned parking cars at the family body shop.

Mistakes do happen. The daughter wasn't drunk, neither was the father, I think the punishment fits the crime. She'll think about that for the rest of her life, every time she gets in a car.

I was in a accident three years ago where I hurt someone. The guy drove a golf cart into the road, and I had no time to react. I swerved, hit the front corner of the cart, and went down a hill into a parking lot striking other cars. This was at a golf course with no signs about golf cart crossings, and I was doing the speed limit. The cop said he felt I did all I could, and told me not to feel bad. I can still see the elderly gentleman lying in the road as he was flung from the cart. Thank god he was only knocked out. It still scared the crap out of me. I got sick when I first saw him, then ran to stop traffic.

You never forget any accident, espically one like that one. Honestly, I don't feel that jail time is appropriate for their actions.

yea, i read this stroy right after i took my wife on her first practice drive, so i of course got the parnoid face! but she practices driving in a big huge empty parking lot with no one around. i keep in second gear for her as to not take off fast and always ready to hit the brake, but she is doing great so far.

but i guess what good can come of this story is for everyone just to be aware more, and take that extra step of precaution when teaching someone to drive.

but it indeed is a sad story.

It ain't no accident. It's predictable that an under age learner will make mistakes. Gassing it and holding it (sometimes thinking it's the brake) is a common error. (Remeber the Audi "unintended acceleration?)

So if you put yourself and your kid in this position with no provision for arresting the car, braking, steering etc, you are NEGLIGENT. And when someone dies as a result, you are CRIMINALLY NEGLIGENT.

It's just like them fellers what spend 6 hours in the bar and then call it an "accident" when they crash. Ain't no accident.
