It's about Engine Oil Use?
What is the mileage intervals between oil changes? pros and cons?
What oil filter brands do you use? and what intervals for the oil filter changes?
As far as brand goes, I've been a Havoline motor oil user for the past 52 years & it's done just fine in all my rides, for the demands I've made of them. I just make sure it meets or exceeds Fords specifcations.
I have switched from dino to Havoline synthetic 5W-30 in my 99 4.0L pushrod Ranger, as I lug & tug in the mountains & it's hot & humid in summer, cold & wet in winter & the vehicle sits outside 24/7!!!!
Their 10W-30 synthetic offers nearly 500 deg volatility, at a good price, so it too would be a good choice for someone lugging & tugging in really hot country!!!!
Do I really need synthetic now, probably not, as todays dino Havoline is as good as, or in some ways, better than, many so called synthetics, but it does offer me a little more on volatility & some other parameters I think are important & can make good use of, in my driving sequences & for the money it's a good value, for the bucks spent IMHO!!!!
I use the Motorcraft filter, tranny & differential lube & brake fluid line & change them as specified, or sooner if I detemine it's needed.
So with over half a century of Havoline use & with it changed on time, no consumption, at it offers high volitility, is shear stable & with good detergent & dispersent, so no sludge, no gelling, no tar, no carbon, no varnish, no deposits, just clean engines, I'm still happy!!!!
So with my driving cycles, my oil & filter changes work out to be about every six months.
I like Motorcrafts filters, because they have the by~pass valve located in the base of the filter, where it should be, for my inverted filter position.
It also has a large, well made filter media, for low pressre drop accross the filter, so we'll get good flow & filtration over it's lifetime & the media can take the heat.
IMHO the Motorcraft FL-1A filter is a very good value for the buck!!!!
So thats my story, Havoline engine oil, Motorcraft filters & other lubes, all changed on time as specified by Ford, or sooner if need be!!!!
I am currently using Chevron Supreme 10w40 in the summer (hotter months) and Chevron Supreme 5w30 in the winter (colder months) on all my engines (360FE 1976 year, 390FE 1967, 4.0L 1992, 2.2L 1992, 302cid 1978, 400cid 1981), I have been using FRAM oil filters and STP oil filters and planning on changing back to the Motorcraft brand or Carquest brand.
On my older trucks, which I use for sometimes for hauling and sometimes for mountain road driving I change the oil at 3000 miles to 3500 miles. On my commuter cars which sees more highway driving I change at 3000 miles to 4000 miles. I have read that changing the oil to soon can create engine damage. What is too soon (cause and effect)?
I change the transmission filters and fluid every 100,000 miles, sometimes I will change the transmission fluid if the fluid looks does not look red and look more brownish. I also flush out the antifreeze at 100,000 miles. I change the power steering fluid at 100,000 miles.

I run Mystik JT-8 10w30 or 15w40 diesel rated in everything. I also use a Napa Gold oil filter on everything, the Fords get a Napa Gold number 1773 oil filter. On to which vehicle gets what and how:
Dad's 2000 Silverado, 4.8L V8. It gets Mystik JT-8 10w30. It is changed as the GM oil life system recommends.
Mom's 2004 Trailblazer, 4.2L I6. It gets Mystik JT-8 10w30. It is changed as the GM oil life system recommends.
1992 Explorer, 4.0L V6, 217,000 miles. It gets Mystik JT-8 15w40. 15w40 is used since it returned the best results on UOA, and the engine runs quieter with it. Changed every 3000 miles.
1970 F100, FE 390 V8, about 3000 miles on rebuild. Mystik JT-8 10w30, changed whenever it leaks down to the quart low line. I think I've got the leaks stopped, so after it's road-worthy again it's going 3000 miles between changes.
~1992 John Deere lawn mower, 15hp V-twin, unknown hours or miles, but a lot. Mystik JT-8 15w40. Seems to run quieter on it.
New Kubota BX2230, 23hp 0.9L 3 cylinder diesel, about 130 hours. Mystik JT-8 15w40.

Dino????
Dino/Synthetic-Blend????
All Synthetic????
Which one meets the Ford lubrication spec called for in the vehicles owners manual???
The dino may not.
The blend may meet it..not all 5W-20's meet Fords requirements.
The Synthetic probably does.
So which Ford spec is called for in your owners manual, for the commuter vehicle????
There is a Ford TSB out, for older engines that can use the Motorcraft 5W-20 oil. So if this a vintage engine, you need to check it against the TSB.
Not all older egines are supposed to use it. For instance Fords old 4.0L pushrod engine is't supposed to use it, 5W-30 is still recommended for it.
it meets Ford
ESE-M2C153-G (SAE 5W-30)
WSS-M2C153-F (SAE 5W-30)
WSS-M2C930-A (SAE 5W-20)
WSS-M2C929-A (SAE 5W-30)
pawpaw, I will need to look at all the owner manuals for all my vehicles this week. I have 4 1975 thru 1978 Ford trucks, with the older style V-8's.
I haven't heard of any TSB for oil use in older vehicles.

My old 78 Mercury Zypher 3.3L had 10W-3 or 10W-40 called out for it. So any of the newer oils, EXCEPT the new SM, would likely be ok for those older flat tappet engines, as I hear there are some problems with the SM oils & their cutback on additives to protect the cat converters & wear on flat tappet engines!!!!
I remember my 94 Taurus 3.8L was ok to use 5W-20, but not my 99 Ranger 4.0L, which still has 5W-30 called for!!!!
I don't remember the TSB number, I'll have to do some searching.
Dang it's gettin complicated just to go buy a danged bottle of oil for our engines now!!!!
It was being discussed here, with a post of the 5W-20 TSB. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...hreadid=130436

.
All 5w20 oils are blends , there is no complete dino versions. you can run 5w20 in your older engines. but you need to do a UOA and see if it is working well. I did plenty of research using FE engines with 5w20 and the results were great. look for them in the FE section. the wear went down.
