front end noises and vibration

I have a strange rattling coming from the passenger side. It is like a metalic clink when you hit bumps and potholes. I have narrowed it down to the axle moving up and down inside the hub. I think it is getting worse because sometimes when I hit a bumb the thing feals like you have the hub locked on one side only and I start getting this vibration under my feet which I believe is the driveshaft spinning. It was doing it on the passenger side untill I changed the ball joints. (haven't replace passenderside ball joints yet)The axle still moves around, but with the new seals it is not as much. Is the seal the only thing that keeps that axle from moving around? And is the axle moving around normal, or should I be worried? Why would it feel like the hub is locked in when it is in the free position?

Sounds like you have big problems. There is to be no up, down, sideways movement of the axle. Only rotational. It spins on a needle bearing.

So I need to replace the needle bearing located in the hub?
