> I have a starting problem with my 79 F150 4X4. It seams that after a long drive (engine completely warmed up) I can’t turn the motor over. All of the lights come on but as soon as I hit the “start position” nothing, just lights and seatbelt buzz. I just replaced the starter last year and I just had about $200 worth or electrical work done to find a bad ground. My gut tells me it’s either the “neutral safety switch” or the “starter solenoid”. What are the characteristics of a bad solenoid? I know the sound they make on a weak battery but can they work intermittently? Every time this happens I wait for a few and then it suddenly turns over and starts. (heat related?) Thanks a lot for the help
Robert
Maybe also check the cable ends under the insulation for corroded wire.
BTW< Because of the enlarege amount of energy needed by the starter Those Cable connections have to be clean as a whistle and tight.
- Check your battery cables like Uncle Mil1ion mentioned. Check your ground cable on engine block and frame for proper and clean contact (remove and clean if necessary).
- With a volt meter check the charging system with your engine running. What is the voltage of the charging system?
- With a volt meter check the voltage when you crank over the engine. What is the voltage.
